US Sanctions Turkish Bank Over Alleged IRGC Transfers In Latest Action<\/span><\/p>\n

The US Treasury announced sanctions on Friday on a Turkey-based bank and two of its subsidiaries<\/strong>, accusing them of moving tens of millions of dollars on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force<\/strong> and facilitating Tehran’s movement of funds across the international banking system.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c”Financial institutions continue to find out the hard way that we are serious about Operation Economic Outcast<\/strong>,” US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. “We know who you are, we know where you are, and we will continue to take action together with our allies and partners until we have buried the head of the Iranian snake.”<\/p>\n

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) named Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi Anonim Sirketi, alongside its two Istanbul-based units, Golden Global Varlik Kiralama Anonim Sirketi and Golden Global Portfoy Yonetimi Anonim Sirketi.<\/p>\n

OFAC alleges the bank was created to help Iranian oil revenues reach Turkey from China<\/strong>, where exchangers converted the funds into cash and gold, and accuses it of opening correspondent banking to Iranian institutions through accounts under Quds Force control.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sanctions come as part of Washington’s Operation Economic Outcast, a campaign to economically asphyxiate Iran by cutting off its remaining revenue and severing the channels it uses to move money abroad.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bessent told\u00a0Reuters<\/i>\u00a0on August 30 that\u00a0fresh secondary sanctions<\/a>\u00a0would follow every week, with banks first in line. He said the Treasury was telling lenders it was not acceptable to hold Iranian money or assist the government in Tehran, and indicated the next escalation could mean severing an institution from the dollar system altogether.<\/p>\n

Days earlier, the Treasury barred the UAE branches of\u00a0Egypt’s Banque Misr<\/a>\u00a0from dollar access over alleged Iranian links.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking ahead of the G20 finance meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, Bessent threatened ministers and central bank governors to break their economic ties with Iran or face secondary sanctions of their own, warning that no leakage would be tolerated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The sanctions come as part of Washington\u2019s “Economic D-Day<\/a>,” an economic strangulation campaign launched after Washington failed to achieve its military objectives against Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“In the Second World War, D-Day\u00a0marked\u00a0the\u00a0historic\u00a0beginning\u00a0of a campaign\u00a0with our allies\u00a0to target\u00a0and drive the\u00a0enemy\u00a0from its\u00a0positions, including\u00a0those\u00a0in\u00a0third\u00a0countries.\u00a0 Today,\u00a0in that same spirit, we are\u00a0launching\u00a0an\u00a0economic\u00a0onslaught\u00a0against\u00a0Iran\u2019s financial\u00a0connections\u00a0around the globe.\u00a0Our\u00a0objective\u00a0is to\u00a0sever\u00a0every economic\u00a0lifeline\u00a0that sustains this\u00a0tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone,” Bessent had said.<\/p>\n

“President Trump has taken action that his predecessors have long deferred.\u00a0Under his leadership, America is no longer managing the Iranian threat. We are ending it.\u00a0Those who stand with the United States will\u00a0reap the rewards of our\u00a0partnership.\u00a0Those who tether themselves to Tehran should expect to share in the isolation of a withering\u00a0regime,” he had also said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
