Bitcoin-Gold Correlation Hits Six-Year High As Debasement Fears Mount<\/span><\/p>\n

Bitcoin\u2019s correlation with gold is at its highest in six years as investors increasingly look for ways to hedge against currency debasement.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

That\u2019s\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to a new report from Bitwise, which this week pointed out that the precious metal and leading cryptocurrency are trading in lockstep because the U.S. government has \u201cmaterially intervened in the macro picture.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bitcoin started surging last month, after the U.S. Treasury Department\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0it would more than double the size of its government debt repurchases. The coin had its best run in three years and third best August ever.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last time the bitcoin-gold correlation was that high was in 2020, following the rounds of fiscal and monetary stimulus during the Covid crisis,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Bitwise\u2019s European Head of Research, Andr\u00e9 Dragosch, wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added that bitcoin\u2019s correlation with the stock market dropped to a one-year low, \u201cimplying some kind of decoupling between hard assets and the stock market.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bitcoin has been pushed as \u201cdigital gold\u201d for years but has sometimes traded with tech stocks as a \u201crisk-on\u201d asset.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But the so-called debasement trade \u2014 when investors buy an asset as a way to hedge against a currency losing value \u2014 was a much-talked about investment strategy last year and appears to be back.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The reason is down to the government intervening in markets, Dragosch argued. When the Treasury said it would try to rein in long-term borrowing costs, the dollar\u2019s value slid and sent investors flooding back to gold \u2014 and bitcoin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Treasury the same week also said the U.S. public debt exceeded $40 trillion for the first time. Excessive debt also undermines confidence in the dollar.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cInvestors are no longer asking whether to hedge currency debasement with gold or bitcoin. They\u2019re simply hedging with both,\u201d <\/strong>the report added.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBitcoin spent its first fifteen years being priced as a risk asset. If this correlation trend with gold holds, the next fifteen may look very different.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The leading cryptocurrency again rallied this week, and was\u00a0recently trading<\/a>\u00a0for close to $81,438 after jumping nearly 6% over a 24-hour period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
