A top Trump administration official revealed that the admin offered Canada the \u201cbest deal\u201d ever right before America\u2019s northern neighbor rejected it.<\/p>\n

Appearing on Fox News\u2019 \u201cSpecial Report<\/a>\u201d on Thursday, President Donald Trump\u2019s top trade advisor, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, stressed repeatedly that Canada walked away from the \u201cbest deal in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

His appearance on Fox News came days after Canada suddenly turned down a pivotal trade deal moments before it was to be finalized.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey came to us, they said we want a deal, and I said, if you\u2019re interested in a deal, we can work on this,\u201d Greer recalled. \u201cAnd I told them what we could deliver. I said, we could try to give you the best deal in the world on steel, aluminum, autos, and help you out on lumber.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we managed to move the levers of our government to give them that deal,\u201d he continued, noting that President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney even shook hands on it \u201cone evening.\u201d<\/p>\n

But then something happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then when they came back, they wanted more,\u201d Greer said. \u201cThey wanted more tariff relief. It wasn\u2019t good enough to have the best deal in the world. They wanted it to be even better and that kind of thing. These were things we couldn\u2019t accommodate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canada subsequently suspended all trade talks on Aug. 21. And then all of a sudden, Canada\u2019s top leaders appeared on TV to trash-talk the U.S.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Canada backed away, their leadership went on TV the next day and said, \u2018 We\u2019re suspending negotiations; we\u2019ve been attacked,\u2019 etc.,\u201d Greer recalled. \u201cAgain, this is for a country that sends the vast majority of their goods duty-free to the United States, where they\u2019ve retaliated against us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember, Canada has been retaliating against us since last year. They banned the sale of American liquor on shelves. They\u2019ve excluded American companies from procurement. Since even before the second Trump term, they\u2019ve limited our ability to sell dairy into Canada,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Asked whether a deal remains possible, Greer said yes but stressed that the ball remains in Canada\u2019s court.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe offered them the best deal,\u201d he said. \u201cThey looked at it square in the face and turned around. They said they\u2019re suspending talks, not something I announced.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to compare Canada\u2019s intransigence to Mexico\u2019s willingness to play ball.<\/p>\n

\u201cI met with the Mexican trade minister this afternoon, and we have very frequent conversations at the highest levels,\u201d Greer revealed. \u201cOver the past year, we have given the Mexican officials many things we\u2019d like them to change in their trade relationship with us, and they\u2019ve been responsive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have issues on intellectual property. They\u2019ve introduced laws to fix IP, to protect American creators. We have issues with security. It\u2019s not specifically trade, but they\u2019ve been responsive. They are eager to do things to protect North America from Chinese imports. They have raised tariffs on China and Vietnam to protect our economy from dumping and subsidizing,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The interview concluded with Greer being asked whether the lack of a deal will affect the midterms given that \u201cthere are 19 states that have Canada as the largest import-export market.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo the number one trading partner of the United States is the United States,\u201d Greer pushed back. \u201cMost of our trade and commerce activity happens within our borders.\u201d<\/p>\n
