For too many, the quest for power drives political ambitions, but few candidates would go so far as to hatch a plan to plant drugs on an opponent.<\/p>\n

While it may sound like a plot for a Hollywood drama series, that is precisely the allegation a Republican candidate for the Missouri state House is facing after being arrested in Joplin, Missouri.<\/p>\n

Thomas Christopher Ross, 37, who won his GOP primary last month by just 33 votes, was arrested and charged in a one-count complaint for conspiring to distribute a controlled substance, according to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Western District of Missouri.<\/p>\n

A former campaign manager told authorities that he was asked by Ross to plant drugs on Louise Secker, who was his opponent in the primary for Missouri House District 161. The former aide provided law enforcement with a black nylon glove that he claimed was given to him by Ross.<\/p>\n

\u201cA small, plastic bag was inside the glove. Inside of the bag was a small amount of white powder. A Nartec Inc. Cocaine Test Kit was used on the powder, which indicated a positive match for cocaine,\u201d the prosecutor\u2019s office said. \u201cAdditionally, inside of the glove was a pink and white capsule. The capsule was identified as Amphetamine and Dextroamphetamine 20 mg extended release, also known as Adderall, a Schedule II controlled substance.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former aide told investigators that he and Ross exchanged text messages, with Ross requesting that he place the bag of drugs inside of the purse or vehicle of Secker while Ross was out of state on vacation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe American people deserve confidence in an electoral process that has served our nation for generations,\u201d U.S. Attorney R. Matthew Price said in a statement. \u201cCandidates are expected to conduct their campaigns with integrity, honesty, and respect for their opponents, allowing voters to make informed decisions without fear of misinformation or undue influence.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Federal Bureau of Investigation field office in Kansas City got involved in the investigation after being contacted by the Joplin Police Department.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe conduct alleged in these charges are substantial and serious,\u201d said Chris Ormerod, FBI Special Agent in Charge. \u201cOur citizens deserve to know that the election process is done with transparency and fairness. As this case moves through the judicial process, it\u2019s important that it proceeds fairly, impartially and in accordance with the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n
