Actor Ryan Reynolds, who was born in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976, had a can of \u201cwhup-ass\u201d opened up on him when he slammed the \u2018traumatic\u2019 and \u2018brutal\u2019 1980s.<\/p>\n

Reynolds, who grew up in Canada, stars in Apple TV\u2019s \u201cMayday,\u201d playing a U.S. Navy pilot who builds an unlikely friendship with an eccentric ex-KGB agent obsessed with \u201980s American culture, as described by Variety.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 80s was a brutal, brutal time for people. It was a f*cking mess and people forget that,\u201d the actor told the outlet. \u201cIt was a tremendous strife. Socio political tensions everywhere. We were still pretty fresh off a Cuban missile crisis, which was only 15-20 years before. It\u2019s a tumultuous period, but you look back at it now and you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, yeah. \u2018Top Gun.\u2019 Cocaine!\u2019 Like, \u2018No!\u2019 It was really scary.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 80s were dominated by Ronald Reagan and his \u201cshining city on the hill,\u201d as he took on the Soviet Union and played a key role in the fall of the Iron Curtain and the eventual collapse of the USSR without firing a shot. Reaganomics and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher also dominated the headlines. A decade kicked off by the Miracle on Ice, when an upstart group of American kids defeated the storied USSR hockey behemoth in Lake Placid, New York.<\/p>\n

The pushback to Reynolds\u2019 take was overwhelming, yet his response was a not-so-clever reference to the horror film \u201cNightmare on Elm Street.\u201d<\/p>\n
