Finnish President Just Made Some Surprisingly Frank Comments About Russia<\/span><\/p>\n

He argued that it\u2019s not plotting to test NATO\u2019s resolve, its resilience to immense hardships \u201cshould never be underestimated\u201d, suggested that the conflict will end without Ukraine recovering its lost territories, praised the CIA chief for visiting Russia, and called for \u201csomeone in Europe\u201d to follow suit.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Finnish President Alexander Stubb bucked the trend of fearmongering about Russia in his interview<\/strong> with\u00a0Bild<\/a>. Instead of claiming that it\u2019s plotting to\u00a0test NATO\u2019s resolve<\/a>\u00a0like American media reported was the reason why the CIA chief recently paid an unannounced visit to Moscow, he described such talk as part of Russia\u2019s \u201cinformation warfare\u201d against Europe. Stubb insisted that his intelligence doesn\u2019t indicate any such plans<\/strong> and argued that Russia wouldn\u2019t attack the world\u2019s most powerful military bloc anyhow.<\/p>\n

He also pointed to the unlikelihood of Russia \u201csuddenly mobilizing\u201d forces for a two-front conflict with Ukraine and NATO<\/strong> even though he still believes that a mobilization directed towards Ukraine will occur this fall despite United Russia Chairman Dmitry Medvedev\u00a0recently denying<\/a>\u00a0that there\u2019s any need to. Another of the surprisingly solid points that Stubb made about Russia had to do with its resilience to immense hardships and warned that this \u201cshould never be underestimated\u201d by its foes.<\/p>\n

He also suggested that Ukraine won\u2019t recover its lost territories<\/strong> upon describing victory for it as simply \u201csurviving, remaining independent, and remaining a sovereign state\u201d but still urged its allies to continue supporting it for their unspecified sake of their own security. Wrapping everything up, Stubb praised the CIA chief\u2019s recent unannounced visit to Moscow for expanding bilateral dialogue in \u201cdifferent formats\u201d,<\/strong> which led to his clarion call for \u201csomeone in Europe\u201d to \u201cresume dialogue with Russia\u201d too.<\/p>\n

Stubb\u2019s last point echoes what he intriguingly told\u00a0local media<\/a>\u00a0a week prior about how \u201cAt some point, dialogue will have to be established on the European side, and perhaps the most important role in this will be played by countries that share a border with Russia.\u201d <\/strong>This followed reports that Britain, France, and Germany \u2013 collectively known as the E3 \u2013 are preparing to resume dialogue with Russia. It was thus analyzed\u00a0here<\/a>\u00a0that the E3 and the\u00a0Intermarium<\/a>\u00a0might open up rival dialogues with Russia.<\/p>\n

The Intermarium refers to the modern-day revival of interwar Poland\u2019s vision of an anti-Soviet alliance between their country, the Baltic States, and Finland, all of which border Russia in the present. Therefore, the abovementioned analysis concluded that Stubb might lead the Intermarium\u2019s dialogue with Russia since regional leader Poland\u2019s government is irreparably divided between the conservative president and the liberal prime minister, which makes it unlikely to agree on this ultra-sensitive issue.<\/p>\n

Stubb also\u00a0expressed interest<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year in serving as the EU\u2019s envoy for talks with Russia back when this role was first discussed among the bloc\u2019s members, but the problem is that Putin\u00a0suggested<\/a>\u00a0shortly thereafter that this should be \u201csomeone who has not badmouthed us\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As it turns out, Stubb was\u00a0recently condemned<\/a>\u00a0by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as a terrorist for justifying\u00a0Ukraine\u2019s attacks against civilian infrastructure<\/a>, which might disqualify him from this role.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Putin might calculate that it\u2019s better for dialogue to occur with Stubb if he initiates it on behalf of Finland, the Intermarium, or the EU as a whole than to rebuff him in that scenario<\/strong>, so the possibility of him entering into some sort of talks with Russia in the future can\u2019t confidently be ruled out.<\/p>\n

While all EU leaders apart from Slovakia\u2019s Robert Fico are adversarial to Russia, Stubb is the most pragmatic among them<\/strong>, so he might ultimately be tasked with this role or play it on his own initiative.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
