{"id":662390,"date":"2026-09-03T12:45:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T12:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=662390"},"modified":"2026-09-03T12:45:00","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T12:45:00","slug":"feds-waller-pushed-rate-hike-hopes-lower-after-stating-the-obvious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=662390","title":{"rendered":"Fed&#8217;s Waller Pushed Rate-Hike Hopes Lower After Stating The Obvious"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Fed&#8217;s Waller Pushed Rate-Hike Hopes Lower After Stating The Obvious<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>A top Federal Reserve official said <strong>he would be \u201cinclined\u201d to keep interest rates on hold<\/strong>, highlighting divisions among the US central bank\u2019s governors as they prepare for a crucial vote this month.<\/p>\n<p>Outspoken Fed Governor Chris Waller clarified this morning what many knew&#8230; that\u00a0he would support holding rates steady at the central bank&#8217;s meeting in two weeks if August inflation data continue the recent progress seen in June and July, but that he could favor a rate increase if that progress reverses.<\/p>\n<p>Recent data have shown signs of improvement on inflation, and<strong> &#8220;if this continues in the data due over the next two weeks, I would be inclined to support holding the target for the federal funds rate at its current setting,&#8221;<\/strong> Waller said in remarks during a Reuters virtual event.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally,\u00a0he offered some optimism that price pressures were showing signs of improvement.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cWhile inflation remains meaningfully above the Federal Open Market Committee\u2019s 2% goal, recent data suggest we are <strong>finally seeing some signs of disinflation,<\/strong>\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The remarks marked a slight shift in tone from July,<\/strong> when Waller said the Fed was at &#8220;a crossroads&#8221; and, sounding less patient, said the central bank would need to consider tightening if evidence materialized of firmer inflation<\/p>\n<p>And that slight shift pushed rate-hike odds for September back to a coin-flip&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2026-09-03_05-44-19.jpg?itok=MqyQs8Kc\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2026-09-03_05-44-19.jpg?itok=MqyQs8Kc\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"09eac232-c4f7-4478-bb89-c0a3908bc8ba\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"308\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/2026-09-03_05-44-19.jpg?itok=MqyQs8Kc\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Market bets on a rate rise moved dramatically after a hawkish speech at Jackson Hole by Fed chair Kevin Warsh last week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warsh said the Fed had \u201cwork to do\u201d unless there was swift progress in bringing prices under control.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Three of the 12 voters on the FOMC backed a quarter-point rate rise at the central bank\u2019s last meeting in July.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly,\u00a0Waller said by communicating his outlook, businesses and households are offered a clearer picture of where policy may be headed.
