15 years of CEOing the world’s most valuable company will come to an end for Tim Cook on September 1, 2026, when he steps down from the role as CEO and is handed over to Apple SVP of Hardware Engineering John Ternus. The handover was first confirmed in April 2026, and will mark the third time Apple’s CEO has changed in the company’s 50-year history.<\/p>\n

Cook was Apple’s CEO for 15 years, taking the reins of a $350bn company founded by Steve Jobs and growing it to be worth around $4trn today. Under his stewardship, Apple’s revenue increased four-fold from $108bn to $416bn, with the iPhone becoming the most profitable product of any kind that has ever been sold to consumers. For much of his tenure with Apple, the stock market loved Cook, who is a consummate corporate operator and focused above all on returning cash to shareholders in the form of share buybacks, rather than chasing after some wild and unproven strategy.<\/p>\n

For much of the Cook era, Apple watched as the competition bet big on artificial intelligence. Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta collectively spent hundreds of billions of dollars to build out AI infrastructure, and Cook opted for a more circuitous route \u2014 partnerships with the big AI players, for instance, as opposed to large-scale investment on his own. Apple launched “Apple Intelligence” several years ago, a program designed to bring AI to iOS, and it was a letdown. Siri, which powers much of the AI on an Apple device, continues to get beaten by competitors that include Google, Anthropic and OpenAI. As ZeroHedge noted in observing the announcement of Cook’s retirement: “You don’t need original ideas, you just need cash for buybacks. Cook showed us that.”<\/p>\n

That bill is now Ternus’s to pay.<\/p>\n

Ternus is 50 years old and has spent 25 years working within Apple, most recently serving as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. Under his purview, the company has released the iPad, the AirPods, the iPhone Air, and the processors that power them all. It is hardware. He makes things for you to hold. Apple’s board is betting that the future of AI will be found in the chip. On-device AI processing of the highest class that also maintains Apple’s vaunted commitment to user privacy while also avoiding the need for a data center-based subscription. He will need to sell this AI vision to the market.<\/p>\n

There are headwinds ahead, however. In the last quarter \u2014 Cook’s last earnings call as CEO \u2014 Apple not only missed estimates for China revenue ($18.82B vs. $19.58B est.) but also missed Services revenue ($30.74B vs. $31.36B est.). Services is Apple’s highest-margin segment of the business, and a segment that has historically produced consistent and strong margin revenue for the company. And it’s China, where Apple had finally begun to recover, that’s started to slow again.<\/p>\n

The Apple CEO job is second only to that of Microsoft CEO in terms of how much attention is focused upon it. And now Apple’s latest CEO will have to define Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy that the market can get behind, not just words delivered from a podium. As Bloomberg reports, he is already pushing out three different types of AI-enabled wearables that will all utilize a re-engineered Siri.<\/p>\n

It remains to be seen whether this is enough to compete with the platforms that have spent $100 billion or more to build AI-powered competitive offerings. For now, it’s the end of the Cook era \u2014 for better or worse. The first hardware guy at the top of Apple since Jobs is going to try and steer a company that has built a 50-year legacy of amazing physical products to make sure it continues to succeed in a world where the most successful companies are those that create the most compelling AI-powered experiences.<\/p>\n
