Vladimir Isachenkov\/AP<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In February, NATO conducted Arctic Sentry, a large-scale military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/world\/nato-launches-arctic-sentry-military-effort-amid-growing-threats-from-china-russia-5984157?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=ZeroHedge\">exercise<\/a> in the Arctic and High North regions, amid concerns over the threat posed by both Russia and China. Russia, which has a naval fleet in the Arctic that includes nuclear-armed submarines dating back to the Soviet era, has long viewed the region as its sphere of interest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Intensive military preparations are underway in close proximity to our northern borders,&#8221;<\/strong> Lavrov said. &#8220;NATO is conducting large-scale military exercises involving non-regional countries and introducing new components of its command-and-control system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said such activity increases the &#8220;risk of incidents that could trigger an armed confrontation with potentially disastrous consequences.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/world\/nato-launches-arctic-sentry-military-effort-amid-growing-threats-from-china-russia-5984157?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=ZeroHedge\">said<\/a> in February that Arctic Sentry was launched as a result of <strong>&#8220;Russia&#8217;s increased military activity, and China&#8217;s growing interest in the High North.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lavrov said the West was also attempting to undermine Russia&#8217;s international cooperation in the Arctic with countries from the &#8220;Global Majority,&#8221; a term the Kremlin often uses to describe African and Asian countries.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, at the NATO summit in Turkey, U.S. President Donald Trump again <strong>pressed for the United States to take control of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/world\/trump-renews-calls-for-us-control-of-greenland-at-nato-summit-6058570?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=ZeroHedge\">Greenland<\/a>, which he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/world\/iceland-votes-on-reopening-eu-talks-in-referendum-too-close-to-call-6080988?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=ZeroHedge\">said<\/a> has become a national security concern because of increasing Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Landmark&#8217; Shipping Voyage<\/h2>\n<p>Moscow is keen on developing the Northern Sea Route, an Arctic shipping corridor that creates a shortcut between Europe and Northeast Asian markets, including China, South Korea and Japan. It could <strong>cut the time for a container ship by 10 days<\/strong> compared with the regular route via the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal, according to the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy.<\/p>\n<p>In his article, Lavrov said a &#8220;landmark event&#8221; in Arctic shipping occurred on Aug. 19.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;For the first time, a container ship from China arrived at the port of Murmansk via the Northern Sea Route<\/strong>, a vital part of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Barents Observer reported that the vessel was the Xin Xin Hai-1, a cargo ship that sails under a Hong Kong flag.<\/p>\n<p>Lavrov said the Arctic contributed <strong>at least 10 percent of Russia&#8217;s GDP<\/strong> and was home to more than 2.5 million Russian citizens.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image_80%281122%29.jpg?itok=nu4EYj_U\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image_80%281122%29.jpg?itok=nu4EYj_U\"><\/a><\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"e7ec18b1-0cd5-40d3-a6ec-604cdac65594\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/image_80%281122%29.jpg?itok=nu4EYj_U\" width=\"500\" \/><figcaption><em>China&#8217;s Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi (L) and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (R) exchange documents during a signing ceremony following talks in Moscow on May 8, 2025.
