SCOTUS Rules Trump Can Build White House Ballroom, Roberts Joins Dissenting Liberals<\/span><\/p>\n

The U.S. Supreme Court just issued an order allowing construction of President Trump\u2019s White House ballroom project to continue<\/strong> while the administration contests a lower court order that would block much of the development.<\/p>\n

The justices voted 5\u20134 (with Chief Justice Roberts joining the three ‘liberal’ judges in dissent) to grant the federal government\u2019s request to stay a lower court\u2019s order halting above-ground construction<\/strong> of the ballroom while a lawsuit against the project by a historic preservation group plays out.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not pass upon the legality\u201d of the project,<\/strong><\/em> the court said in an unsigned eight-page decision from five of the court\u2019s six Republican-appointed justices.<\/p>\n

As The Wall Street Journal reports<\/a>, two lower courts <\/a>had declared the ballroom project illegal and said construction must be halted.<\/p>\n

But a judge\u2019s stop-work order was put on hold while the administration pursued appeals.<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court\u2019s ruling keeps that order on hold indefinitely, effectively giving a green light to one of Trump\u2019s most visibly audacious projects, which critics see as the latest instance of the president ignoring Congress and flouting norms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Writing for the dissenters, Roberts said the project is \u201clikely unlawful.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe White House is an iconic American building whose symbolism and history are wrapped up in its architecture,\u201d Roberts wrote, adding that it is critical to \u201censure that those responsible follow the rules in deciding what to tear down and what to build up at the People\u2019s House.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Roberts had already blocked the stop-work order from kicking in on Aug. 22 <\/strong>with a temporary measure that gave the justices more time to deliberate.<\/p>\n

In his emergency appeal to the high court, the solicitor general warned that stopping work now would leave the half-built project \u201csusceptible to strong winds during extreme weather, and vulnerable to erosion, water, foundation damage, and other setbacks that will fundamentally compromise the integrity of everything currently built.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The green light means the project could largely be completed before a final ruling on its legality.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Construction on the project, which calls for building a 90,000-square-foot ballroom, began in September 2025.<\/p>\n

Building it required demolishing the East Wing, which Trump\u00a0said was too small and in poor shape.<\/p>\n

The facility is now expected to accommodate 1,000 guests, up from the initial 650 people projected, and its original $200 million price tag has doubled, though the true cost of the project is unknown.<\/p>\n

Trump has pledged the project will be paid for entirely with private donations,<\/strong> but taxpayers could help fund<\/a> security-related upgrades if a GOP-led Congress approves it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
