{"id":660507,"date":"2026-08-31T06:45:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T06:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=660507"},"modified":"2026-08-31T06:45:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T06:45:00","slug":"canadian-leftists-want-to-use-great-lakes-seaway-as-a-weapon-against-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=660507","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Leftists Want To Use Great Lakes Seaway As A Weapon Against The US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Canadian Leftists Want To Use Great Lakes Seaway As A Weapon Against The US<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>If anyone had any doubt that Canada is a predominantly far-left country, one only need look at polls in support of Market Carney&#8217;s trade war rhetoric against the US.\u00a0 Over <a href=\"https:\/\/toronto.citynews.ca\/2026\/08\/28\/canada-abacus-poll-us-trade-talks-mark-carney-donald-trump-tariffs\/\">70% of the Canadian population<\/a> is currently in support of Carney&#8217;s decision to dismiss trade negotiations with the Trump Administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Much of the rhetoric online repeats leftist talking points, including the claim that America is now a &#8220;fascist&#8221; state and cutting a deal with Trump would be the same as &#8220;cutting a deal with the Third Reich&#8221;.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, Carney was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c3ekl74jnk5o\">so close to a deal<\/a> with the US that Trump had paused new tariffs and Carney asked premiers to put American liquor back on provincial shelves.\u00a0 The was two days before he abruptly backed out and abandoned any future talks.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Theories abound.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The most prominent theory being that Carney has been talking with US Democrats and was convinced to avoid cutting a deal with Trump before the midterm elections in November.\u00a0 Any deal would be seen as a win for Trump that might boost Republicans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other theories cite potential foreign influence from the EU.\u00a0 Carney was on vacation in Italy just before the negotiations were to finalize and he engaged in a flurry of meetings and calls with European officials just after his trade war decision.\u00a0 Leftists governments in Europe and communists in China have much to gain by continued tensions between Canada and the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that the full text of the deal still has not been released to the Canadian public for review.\u00a0 Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre called on the Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/windsor\/article\/release-the-text-reopen-parliament-poilievre-on-failed-trade-talks\/\">to release details<\/a> of the failed trade deal with the United States and reconvene parliament.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to see the deal that we rejected. Canadians have not seen it,\u201d said Poilievre.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whatever may have happened to convince Carney to walk away from the best tariff deal that was offered to any country, the aftermath has stirred plenty of Canadian citizens into a hostile frenzy.\u00a0 One is reminded of Scrappy Doo, yipping and yapping and nipping at the heals of a much larger opponent in the delusion that this will accomplish something.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, 33% of Canada&#8217;s GDP relies on exports and 78% of those exports rely on US markets.\u00a0 Furthermore, there are no practical alternatives.\u00a0 Without a near-term deal with the US, Canada faces severe recession, or worse.\u00a0 Canadian officials and the public have not yet come to accept this reality.\u00a0 They have been busy conjuring ways to &#8220;hurt&#8221; the US, but these tactics are based on an ignorance of the bigger picture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/St_Lawrence_Seaway.jpg?itok=IuLbqF2N\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/St_Lawrence_Seaway.jpg?itok=IuLbqF2N\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"91099687-9a1a-408f-9df4-d0f866aa5ebc\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"375\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/St_Lawrence_Seaway.jpg?itok=IuLbqF2N\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For example, Canadian officials recommended shutting off electric supplies to the US eastern seaboard.\u00a0 However, Canada provides less than 1% of all US electricity.\u00a0 Meaning, they have no leverage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They also called for a shutdown of oil exports to the US, but the US is a net exporter of oil and the largest oil producer in the world.\u00a0 Going without Canadian oil would cause prices to rise, but it would not do the kind of damage they are hoping for.\u00a0 Trump&#8217;s latest landmark deal with Venezuela will mitigate any potential supply disruptions from Canada.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plus, 70% of Canadian oil traveling from Alberta to Ontario uses pipelines that cross into US territory (the Enbridge Mainline).\u00a0 It would be a disaster for them to escalate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This brings us to the newest ingenious idea from Canadian leftists, which is to shut down US access to the St. Lawrence Seaway from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0 Or, increase tolls to crippling levels at the various Canadian controlled locks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\">Canada is now considering charging a toll for US ships travelling the Straight Of Ontario. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jNjLYVaUsA\">pic.twitter.com\/jNjLYVaUsA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dean Blundell\ud83c\udde8\ud83c\udde6 (@ItsDeanBlundell) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ItsDeanBlundell\/status\/2093136023697899571?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 28, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is a problem with this plan, though.\u00a0 First, Canada already charges tolls at these locks and has done so for decades.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\">Every ship entering the Great Lakes goes through the Welland Canal, located fully in Canada. There\u2019s no other option. $26.3 billion of US trade depends on it.
