Icelanders turned down the European Union referendum harder than expected on Saturday, dealing a sharp rebuke to their own left-leaning government and to Brussels globalists who spent months pushing hard for a yes vote.<\/p>\n

Polling showed the issue as too close to call, but when the final results were in, 47.2% of the voters were for another round of EU negotiations, and 52.8% were against. Outside of the capital, Reykjavik, voters were more adamant. Almost every other region of Iceland \u2014 a country of roughly 400,000 people \u2014 voted no, while Reykjavik alone supported the measure.<\/p>\n

The EU dilemma has haunted Icelandic politics for over a decade. In 2009, Iceland applied for EU membership after its banking system collapsed, but a center-right government froze talks in 2013 before negotiations on the sensitive fisheries chapter could even begin. Iceland formally requested Brussels to remove it from candidate status in 2015.<\/p>\n

The current center-left government had promised a referendum by 2027, but moved the vote up after President Trump renewed his push to acquire Greenland. Supporters of EU membership tried to use fear of American pressure as a reason to huddle closer to Brussels. Voters were not buying it.<\/p>\n

Opponents argued what most reasonable people could see: Iceland already benefits from EU single market access and Schengen free travel through its existing agreements, without handing sovereignty to unelected bureaucrats in Brussels. “If you apply to join the EU, you are applying to join the EU,” said former Foreign Minister Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson bluntly, pushing back against the government’s attempt to frame the vote as merely opening talks.<\/p>\n

Physics professor Haraldur Olafsson, who chairs the eurosceptic movement Heimssyn, called the wording of the referendum question deliberately deceptive \u2014 designed to make it “very difficult to say no to discussions.” Voters cut through the spin anyway.<\/p>\n

Over the summer, EU officials and foreign ministers from Spain, Austria, and France made trips to Reykjavik to lobby for a yes vote. Thordarson called those visits “foreign interference.” Iceland’s voters agreed \u2014 by voting no.<\/p>\n

The globalist project has taken another hit. After Brexit, after the ongoing collapse of public trust in EU institutions across member states, and now after Iceland’s clear choice to guard its fishing rights and its sovereign currency, the pattern is clear: when ordinary people get a direct vote on handing power to Brussels, they frequently say no.<\/p>\n
