Iran is proposing a new framework to Oman that would allow commercial ships to once again transit the Strait of Hormuz through a \u201cmanaged\u201d corridor \u2013 under Iran\u2019s control. According to Iranian officials, this new corridor would be closed to all US military warships. Has President Trump and the White House given consideration to any such terms regarding the warships of the US Navy?<\/p>\n

CENTCOM for its part told Fox News Digital that, \u201cIran does not control the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway and commercial vessels continue to transit through the Strait while receiving assistance from U.S. military. To date, CENTCOM personnel and assets have assisted the safe transit of nearly 1,500 commercial vessels through the Strait since early May.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s economy is deteriorating dramatically under maximum pressure which has seen to drop Iranian crude exports dramatically as well as drastically reduce supply of domestic fuels to the point where long queues of cars have been seen in the streets of Tehran. The plan, which was outlined in a meeting of Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi with the Prime Minister of Qatar Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Doha, claims that the United States must accept that \u201cpressure doesn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the Iranian proposal for a \u201ctoll\u201d to pass through the strait \u201cillegal and unacceptable\u201d as recently as last month. This month, President Trump went a step further, warning the Omanis not to interfere with a US-negotiated deal to reopen the strait. The sudden silence of the White House press office on this topic is being interpreted by analysts as strategic ambiguity, or a way to keep Iran guessing while the sanctions bite.<\/p>\n

The conditions Iran has outlined for Hormuz to reopen to commercial shipping\u2014end the blockade of Iranian ports by U.S. and\/or Israeli warships, lift all sanctions currently imposed by the U.S. on Iran, pay reparations to Iran\u2014remain non-starters for the U.S. which has indicated no interest in agreeing to these terms. <\/p>\n

And there\u2019s one thing that is crystal clear throughout the crisis: Trump has repeatedly said that he would never allow a foreign power to control an international waterway. And now that same foreign power, Oman, is trying to bridge the gap between Iran\u2019s demanding conditions for Hormuz\u2019s reopening on Tehran\u2019s terms and the U.S. refusal to give up on naval patrols through the Strait.<\/p>\n
