{"id":659212,"date":"2026-08-28T13:09:54","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T13:09:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=659212"},"modified":"2026-08-28T13:09:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T13:09:54","slug":"canadas-broadcasting-system-orders-media-not-to-refer-to-9-11-as-terrorist-attacks-leaked-memo-shows-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=659212","title":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s broadcasting system orders media not to refer to 9\/11 as \u2018terrorist attacks\u2019, leaked memo shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/americanwirenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rf-pexels-sept.-11-memorial-1200x630.jpg\" class=\"attachment-facebook size-facebook wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<p>A leaked Canadian Broadcasting Corporation memo shows reporters being instructed not to refer to the Sept. 11 terror attacks as \u201cterrorist attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memo was outed by Warren Kinsella, a Canadian journalist who confirmed the existence of the memo to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/islamic-terrorism\/article-906796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Jerusalem Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Written by Basem Boshra, the senior director of journalistic standards and public trust at CBC News, the memo contained a section pertaining to \u201clongstanding language guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not refer to the Sept. 11 attacks as terrorist attacks,\u201d the section read. \u201cThe hijackings led to passenger jet crashes in Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania and Manhattan. The World Trade Center (WTC in second reference) was destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The story is in <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TheTorontoSun?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TheTorontoSun<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y2Bw7XpNyh\">https:\/\/t.co\/y2Bw7XpNyh<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9bG2hgkNcK\">pic.twitter.com\/9bG2hgkNcK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Warren Kinsella (@kinsellawarren) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kinsellawarren\/status\/2092937551195635999?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 27, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After being confronted with the memo, a CBC spokesperson defended it, saying it\u2019s the network\u2019s practice to \u201cexercise extreme caution before using the words terrorist and terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe memo was a reminder of the longstanding practice that favors the use of these terms with attribution in our reporting,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson also pointed to an October 2023 blog by CBC editor-in-chief and general manager Brodie Fenlon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCBC News does not itself designate specific groups as terrorists, or specific acts as terrorism, regardless of the region or the events, because these words are so loaded with meaning, politics and emotion that they can end up being impediments to our journalism,\u201d the blog post read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the language is not seriously disputed in some cases, it\u2019s less clear if not highly contested at other times \u2013 which can lead to virtually endless questions about consistency and impartiality in our coverage of various attacks around the world,\u201d it continued.<\/p>\n<p>These excuses have done little to temper a rising tide of growing anger against the CBC coming from both inside Canada and also the U.S. government:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Any agency in Canada that doesn\u2019t publicly reject this bastardization of history, and an insult to the souls lost during our largest terrorist attack in US history will no longer have friend in this FBI\u2026 Not to mention our heroes that responded in the aftermath <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f1fa-1f1f8.png\" alt=\"\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8\" class=\"wp-smiley\" \/><\/p>\n<p>WE WILL NEVER\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 FBI Director Kash Patel (@FBIDirectorKash) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FBIDirectorKash\/status\/2093133660245356995?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 28, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Canadian MP Rachel Thomas told the Post that the memo is \u201cabsolutely shameful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CBC is choosing to redefine terrorism in a way that downplays the atrocity of 9\/11,\u201d she continued. \u201cRefusing to call it an act of terrorism dishonors the victims, their families, the survivors, and the first responders who witnessed the horrors of that day. 9\/11 was an act of terrorism. Full stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kinsella, for his part, penned a whole column at the <a href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/opinion\/columnists\/september-11-cbc-terrorist-attack-memo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toronto Sun<\/a> tearing into the CBC for its misguided decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA falsehood is a falsehood,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWe tell our kids that, too. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which all of us gave $1.57 billion in 2025-26, operates under different rules. It tells us lies about history and reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the historical reality is that thousands of innocents were murdered 25 years ago, by terrorists. We all know that, we all call it that. At CBC, they don\u2019t care. They do and say whatever the hell they want to,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What possible motive could there be for sanitizing the worst terrorist attack on American soil? Moody has called for the CBC, which is publicly funded, to lose its grants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would be wholly in support to significantly reduce funding to the CBC solely because of this,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KimGCMoody\/status\/2092792964821258526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a tweet before going on to describe how much the public corporation has fallen in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, believe me, CBC has gone so downhill from the days of my youth \u2013 Knowlton Nash and Barbara Frum \u2013 that it deserves either a significant re-think and \/ or defunding.
