The world may have taken one giant step closer to curing one of the deadliest forms of cancer.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Rasonque, a daily pill that\u2019s shown promising signs in the fight against pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n

Rasonque, manufactured by California company Revolution Medicine, works as an inhibitor that targets certain forms of protein called RAS known to increase tumor growth, Fox News reported.<\/p>\n

Even better, the new drug is expected to help those with advanced pancreatic cancer, and the FDA wants to start administering it \u201cas quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s approval provides a critical new option for patients facing an extraordinarily difficult and historically hard-to-treat cancer. It is our fundamental duty to deliver more cures and meaningful treatments to patients as quickly as possible,\u201d acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas said in a press release.<\/p>\n

According to Fox:<\/p>\n

The new drug was approved after a randomized, open-label trial of 500 patients with pre-treated metastatic disease. Patients taking Rasonque achieved a median overall survival of 13.2 months, nearly double the 6.7-month survival rate seen in the standard chemotherapy control group.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The relatively low 3.2% rate of Pancreatic cancer causes disproportionate numbers of deaths, as it\u2019s usually found late and has been notoriously hard to treat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis drug showed unprecedented results in an area of high unmet need,\u201d said Angelo de Claro, M.D., director of the FDA\u2019s Oncology Center of Excellence, according to Fox.<\/p>\n

Release of the promising new drug was fast-tracked and approved by the agency more than six months ahead of its review deadline.<\/p>\n
