As the war with Russia carried on for four and a half years, he expressed his view that \u201celections in general pose major risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that if we want to destroy the country, then we can move towards elections during this kind of war,\u201d Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/volodymyr-zelenskyy-elections-would-tear-ukraine-apart\/\">reported<\/a> Zelenskyy as saying, insisting a vote \u201cright now would be a tsunami for the state, one that would divide Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why my strategy is to steer the country toward an ending of the war and to preserve an independent and sovereign state,\u201d added the president.<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy\u2019s view marked a direct contrast with a likely rival, former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who was ousted in July. During an address to the people last week, the former official called out his own government while calling for an election to be held.<\/p>\n<p>Fedorov argued, \u201cpeople cannot endlessly live in a state where they do not understand why certain decisions are made.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Ukraine\u2019s ousted defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov called for wartime elections in a video address, arguing the nation faced a crisis of governance, in the biggest internal challenge to \u200cPresident Volodymyr Zelenskiy since Russia\u2019s invasion <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DJRxjcWH6t\">https:\/\/t.co\/DJRxjcWH6t<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/b72CVNvj4Q\">pic.twitter.com\/b72CVNvj4Q<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Reuters (@Reuters) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Reuters\/status\/2090015929883324480?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 19, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The former official further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cwy4ypzvd7po\">told<\/a> the BBC over the weekend that the president has \u201cquestions to answer\u201d and his country\u2019s \u201cdemocracy should not be the hostage of\u201d Russian President Vladimir Putin. \u201cIf I cannot share my ideas and be open about them with my own society, then what are we fighting for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Zelenskyy said of the ousted minister,\u00a0\u201cI really had and still have a very positive attitude toward Mykailo. We have been through a lot together. But I believe that he himself goes, or is pushed, into the wrong things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was previously <a href=\"https:\/\/americanwirenews.com\/zelenskyy-say-us-not-funding-the-war-in-ukraine-its-protecting-freedom-and-democracy\/\">reported<\/a> in early 2024 that an election would have been scheduled to take place. However, under the Ukrainian constitution, martial law must be suspended to allow for a vote. As an election would have ultimately gauged the Ukrainian people\u2019s appetite for the continued fighting with Russia, Zelenskyy argued months earlier, \u201cNow, in wartime, when there are so many challenges, it is absolutely irresponsible to throw the topic of elections into society in a lighthearted and playful way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, even The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/18\/world\/europe\/ukraine-press-freedom.html\">reported<\/a> on concerns in Ukraine about freedom of the press. In June 2024, the newspaper detailed, \u201cA Ukrainian reporter who revealed that a state news agency tried to bar interviews with opposition politicians said he received a military conscription notification the next day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report went on to state, \u201cAnalysts say the government\u2019s efforts to control the media appear to be aimed at crimping positive coverage of the opposition and suppressing negative coverage of the government and the military.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, amid ongoing efforts to stay on the good side of President Donald Trump, Zelenskyy agreed with the chief executive and told American reporters in December, \u201cLook, I am ready for elections \u2026 I personally have the will and readiness to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/americanwirenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/sg-zelenskyy-1200x630.jpg\" title=\"Zelensky says no elections until war ends \u2014 even if peace remains years away\" \/><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Years after his tenure was set to expire, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continued to fault Russia over his opposition to an election.
