Alexander Titleov reports from the AfD summer school in Bad Hofgastein: AfD leader Alice Weidel has put two of Europe\u2019s most sacred cows on the block \u2013 the euro and the Schengen system \u2013 and seems to be enjoying the look of fear on the faces of her establishment rivals.<\/p>\n

Germany would be \u201csignificantly better off\u201d outside of the euro, according to the interview with ZDF, in which Weidel stated that an AfD government would pull Germany out of the Euro and the Schengen zone of open borders. The single currency has created an \u201cunstable\u201d situation that has \u201cweakened\u201d Germany, Weidel charged, and is to blame for the \u201cbroad-based decline in the value of working Germans\u201d.<\/p>\n

As for the Schengen area, Weidel announced that as well as closing the borders, an AfD government would also withdraw from the Schengen area. Germany had already started to introduce checks on its borders when it reintroduced checks on the border with Austria at the end of 2020. Weidel wants to make these border controls permanent, reported Clash Report.<\/p>\n

The number of deportations of migrants has to be increased, the amount of naturalizations of foreigners has to be decreased. 1.3 million Syrians are living in Germany at the moment. Under an AfD government they would be returned to Syria. People whose grounds for protection have ended have to leave, not get German citizenship.<\/p>\n

Alice Weidel claimed that in her opinion, Chancellor Friedrich Merz\u2019s CDU as well as Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil\u2019s SPD are misleading voters and damaging Germany. In her opinion, the so-called \u201cfirewall\u201d that the CDU is calling for in order to prevent cooperation with the AfD is fundamentally undemocratic. Weidel forecasted that this would cost the CDU a lot of votes in the future.<\/p>\n

Polls are backing Weidel\u2019s confidence in her party\u2019s prospects. In the Saxony-Anhalt election, due to be held on September 6, the polls have the Alternative for Germany (AfD) on over 40 percent, and the national average from Forschungsgruppe Wahlen has them on 27 percent, compared with 22 percent for the CDU. As Weidel said: \u201cWe will govern in the first federal states. And we will also govern at the federal level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weidel further attacked the SPD, the Finance Ministry and Merkel\u2019s CDU on economic and climate policy. First of all she demanded that the ban on new combustion engines for cars is to be abolished. That, however, is not enough for her. The whole of prohibition-based policymaking is to be abolished.<\/p>\n

It has taken the German establishment years of trying to build institutional firewalls, of using media to put pressure on them and of trying to keep them at bay by means of law. Now it seems as though all of this is failing and that the program of the once fringe party is going to become the governing agenda of Germany.<\/p>\n
