It would be his second trip to Pyongyang in seven years, and comes at a pivotal moment on the Korean Peninsula.

This comes as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi concluded a two-day visit to South Korea on Friday. Wang met with senior South Korean officials, urging the country to pursue “genuine strategic autonomy” and warning against “bloc confrontation” — stating that China wishes for Seoul to maintain good relations with both Beijing and Washington in a “mutually compatible manner.” Wang also declined to support South Korea’s push for multiparty peace talks involving the North.

The Xi visit is set to take place in the direct aftermath of Trump’s announcement that he intended to meet Kim Jong Un before the end of the year. The very next day, North Korea launched 10 ballistic missiles into the sea — a pointed display of force and rejection of Washington’s overtures for dialogue.

The broader strategic context matters. In September 2025, Kim Jong Un met jointly with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin in Beijing — the first time the North Korean leader had gathered with both the Chinese and Russian heads of state simultaneously. Since then, Russia has vetoed UN Security Council attempts to enforce sanctions on North Korea, and China has steadily expanded trade with Pyongyang. The architecture of international pressure that once pushed Kim toward the 2018 Singapore summit has been systematically dismantled.

For Washington, Xi’s imminent Pyongyang visit poses a complex diplomatic challenge. Trump had already scaled back joint military exercises with South Korea — a concession Pyongyang long demanded — yet North Korea responded with a missile barrage rather than goodwill. Beijing now appears to be tightening its embrace of Kim before any Trump-Kim summit can materialize, potentially leveraging Pyongyang as a card in the larger US-China economic confrontation.

Following the North’s missile launches, South Korea convened an emergency security meeting, and the US, Japan, and South Korea called jointly on Pyongyang to cease provocations. Xi’s scheduled visit will only deepen Seoul’s unease that the two superpowers are pursuing competing agendas on its doorstep.

The incident happens at a time when South Korea has been shown to be a captured nation by the Chinese Communist Party, complete with stolen elections, and the likely real president sits in jail.

‘NO AD’ subscription for CDM!
