America First conservatives reacted negatively to President Donald Trump\u2019s plan, announced Friday, to import cheap foreign beef.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, I concluded a deal to substantially lower the price of ground beef for working American families,\u201d the president announced on Truth Social. \u201c[F]or the next 90 days, the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be imported with no out of quota tariff.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices. This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The announcement triggered a flurry of across-the-board pushback from conservatives and Republicans.<\/p>\n

Republican Sen. Tim Sheehy wrote<\/a> in a tweet that while the president\u2019s \u201cheart is in the right place on wanting lower prices,\u201d importing cheap beef \u201cwill make it more difficult for American ranchers to rebuild our herd.\u201d<\/p>\n

Herds have faltered in recent years due to severe, widespread droughts, high feed\/fertilizer\/fuel costs, and, of course, the New World screwworm<\/a> (NWS). America First Republicans say the correct solution is to overcome these obstacles versus turning to outsourced, foreign meat.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlooding the market with foreign beef hurts our livestock industry and undermines the long-term solution: growing the U.S. cattle herd to meet demand,\u201d Sen. Deb Fischer pointed out<\/a> in a tweet.<\/p>\n

Even former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene weighed in on the president\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n

Calling the president\u2019s post \u201cpaid slop,\u201d the former congresswoman wrote that American beef producers are now being \u201cundercut\u201d both \u201cby foreign imported beef\u201d and \u201chigh cost of fertilizer and diesel\u201d from the Iran War.<\/p>\n

Rep. Thomas Massie, who was recently successfully primaried, also weighed in on the matter, writing<\/a> in a tweet that the president\u2019s announcement and plan are \u201ca slap in the face to American cattlemen & consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWorse than socialism!\u201d he added. \u201cDumping foreign beef in U.S. markets can temporarily lower prices but it won\u2019t incentivize American farmers to raise more beef.\u201d<\/p>\n

Confronted with some of this criticism later Friday afternoon, the president argued that ranchers \u201cneed a little help in order to get the prices down.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, even the National Cattlemen\u2019s Beef Association (NCBA) is upset with the president.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica\u2019s cattle producers share the goal of keeping groceries affordable for consumers, flooding the market with government-subsidized, below-market beef is not the way to rebuild the American cattle herd,\u201d NCBA Chief Executive Officer Colin Woodall wrote in a statement, according to Newsweek<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cCattle markets have already turned sharply lower this morning, to the detriment of farmers and ranchers,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\n

For the second time in less than 12 months, the Trump Administration is intervening in markets in an attempt to artificially lower beef prices. Current retail prices are high because of strong consumer demand for the high-quality beef we produce.<\/p>\n

Sen. Chuck Grassley, meanwhile, wrote on X that he was \u201cconcerned for the cattle markets\u201d given both the president\u2019s latest move and the recent closure of a Tyson beef plant in Illinois.<\/p>\n
