U.S. Ambassador to T\u00fcrkiye Tom Barrack issued a stark warning this week, telling the Jerusalem Post<\/em> that Israel’s recent strike on Abu al-Duhur airbase in Syria \u2014 conducted without advance notice to Ankara \u2014 came dangerously close to triggering a direct military confrontation between Israel and Turkey.<\/p>\n

Barrack, who also serves as Trump’s Special Envoy for Syria and Iraq, laid out the theories for what he called “a very dangerous game.”<\/p>\n

“The first one is that the Israelis were baiting the Turks,” Barrack told the Jerusalem Post<\/em>. “If you remember, the Turks took out a Russian jet under the same kind of circumstances. Very dangerous game, having jets deployed on the border without notification, without some agreement.”<\/p>\n

Barrack confirmed Turkish forces were not warned that Israeli aircraft were en route to the base \u2014 meaning Ankara could have scrambled its own jets, believing it was under attack. He also revealed that U.S. and allied intelligence six days before the strike had flagged possible Turkish military movement into the site \u2014 a report that was checked and dismissed.<\/p>\n

“The issue had arisen probably six days before to us, saying, ‘We have some intelligence that there might be Turkish movement into this site, which we would be very concerned about,'” Barrack explained. “We all did our due diligence. We went back to our respective intelligence agencies. The answers we got were, ‘No, that’s not happening.'”<\/p>\n

Despite the near-miss, Barrack said Turkey’s leadership \u2014 from the president to the intelligence chief to the foreign minister \u2014 is focused entirely on restraint.<\/p>\n

“I know that the Turks \u2014 their intelligence agency, their hierarchy, their foreign minister, the president, the head of intelligence \u2014 all are concentrating on restraint,” he said. “They’re not predatory. They’re not interested in attacking or even engaging in any kind of kinetic or adversarial relationship with Israel. It’s not good for the region. It’s not good for them.”<\/p>\n

Barrack added that in Turkey’s view, the path to regional stability runs through a Palestinian solution \u2014 not military confrontation with Israel.<\/p>\n

“Everybody is looking for an off-ramp someplace. In T\u00fcrkiye’s mind, the off-ramp, more than Iran, is a Palestinian solution. That’s really the problem in the Turkish population and the Islamic population.”<\/p>\n

When pressed on whether the episode risked wider escalation, Barrack did not rule it out \u2014 but said the intent is simply not there.<\/p>\n

“The Turkish military is strong, they’re courageous, they’re very well equipped, they know what they’re doing,” he said. “Could this be World War III? I think our opinion is anything could be World War III from an unintended act, if you just looked at World War II. But our belief is there’s no intention at all to do any of those things.”<\/p>\n

Washington publicly rebuked Israel over the strikes, calling them “unnecessary escalation.” Barrack’s comments make clear how close the region came to something far worse.<\/p>\n
