President Donald Trump called the measures his administration has taken against Iran the ‘most crushing economic operation’ against any country. Iran and the U.S. were set to engage in talks to remove nuclear sanctions against Iran on Wednesday, but with no decision made before the deadline, Trump’s administration took the economic measures against Iran.<\/p>\n

Trump posted on his social media site Truth Social that his administration would initiate a campaign of economic warfare ‘like the world has never seen before.’ He also said ‘any country whose financial institutions, businesses, or government agencies continue to provide support to Iran will be subject to TREMENDOUS economic consequences. Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies must stop.’ ‘You know who you are,’ Trump added.<\/p>\n

Last week, Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, said the administration is preparing to implement ‘a combination of economic isolation like the world has never seen before.’ Trump said Iran’s economy is ‘hanging by a thread,’ and that the measures would ‘cripple [their] economy’ and ‘destroy [their] ability to project terror around the world.’ Trump called the campaign ‘Economic D-Day.’<\/p>\n

Foreign Minister of Iran Abbas Araghchi called the administration’s new measures a ‘lack of seriousness’ and said ‘the new American measures will fail.’ Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf went to Baghdad, and Iranian officials are using regional diplomacy as pressure against Iran increases.<\/p>\n

This move is being made just over a month after a US-Iran truce to stop hostile activities, and as the US endeavors to restart the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is the second most sanctioned country in the world, and has defiantly refused to yield to US demands. Administration officials say that, in the face of Iran’s intransigence, they will implement broader secondary sanctions targeting Chinese oil importers and financial institutions that facilitate Iranian oil trade.<\/p>\n

The rial has collapsed, oil and trade output have fallen, and inflation has skyrocketed in Iran. Trump believes that the forced economic measures can persuade Iran to talk. The leadership is adamant that they can outwait the pressures.<\/p>\n
