The announcement, posted just after midnight Eastern time, stunned Washington and sent shockwaves through diplomatic channels across the Middle East, where tensions had been building to their highest flash point since the conflict began in February.

Trump posted that the United States was “locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II.” Then came the pivot. “Despite this,” he wrote, “we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to.” The announced deal framework, per Trump, would include the “Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT” and a definitive end to Iran’s nuclear weapons program — two demands that Washington has insisted on since the first day of hostilities.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, appearing on Fox News shortly after the post went live, confirmed the shift in posture. “He’s giving talks some space, he’s giving it a little bit of room,” Waltz told the network. A senior Iranian source told Reuters that Tehran would halt its own ongoing strikes on Gulf infrastructure as long as the U.S. maintained the pause — a rare signal of reciprocal restraint from a regime that, as recently as Thursday, was lobbing missiles at American military installations in Kuwait and Bahrain.

The announcement caught many in Trump’s own military and national security apparatus off guard. According to reporting by Axios, the strike package had been finalized and orders were prepared. Multiple senior defense officials told outlets the target set was among the most comprehensive ever assembled against Iranian infrastructure — going well beyond the energy grid strikes authorized earlier in the week. The scale of what was planned, and then abruptly cancelled, underscores just how close the two countries came to a catastrophic escalation.

The skeptics, however, are already out in force. Iran’s track record of using temporary ceasefire windows to regroup, resupply, and rearm is well documented. The July 30th ceasefire collapsed within 48 hours after Iran attacked a U.S. base in Jordan. That pattern has made many in the America First community deeply wary of what “perimeters of a deal” actually means in practice — especially since no formal text, no Iranian official statement, and no third-party mediator confirmation had been publicly released as of early Sunday morning.

What’s different this time, analysts aligned with the Trump doctrine argue, is the leverage equation. Iran’s oil infrastructure is partially destroyed. The Strait of Hormuz remains operationally threatened but technically open. Gulf Arab states — historically hedgers — have reportedly joined the diplomatic push, per Trump’s own post, and a deal that reopens Hormuz to normal commercial shipping carries enormous economic value for Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, and Kuwait City alike. Those nations have something to lose if Iran drags the war further, and something to gain if they can claim credit for brokering the exit ramp.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to Fox News earlier Saturday, framed the moment in blunter terms. “With President Trump, the regime in Tehran is facing someone that actually takes action,” Rubio said. That implicit warning — that Trump’s willingness to pause does not mean a willingness to walk away — is likely the real message being delivered to Tehran through back channels. Whether Iran’s current leadership, whoever actually holds power in the post-Khamenei period, can translate that message into a durable agreement remains the central unanswered question of the entire conflict.

‘NO AD’ subscription for CDM!
