The Trump administration\u2019s dreams of razing the Department of Education are on hold, thanks to the help of two Republicans.<\/p>\n

The Senate HELP (Health, Education, Labor and Pensions) Committee voted on Thursday to pass a bill that would block the movement of special education and other offices to alternate federal entities.\u00a0Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), joined forces to push the bill, putting a speed bump on the administration\u2019s path to scrap the Education Department entirely.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis bill is straightforward. It keeps the administration of important landmark education programs at the Department of Education, where Congress specifically put them and where they belong,\u201d said Collins.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot lose sight of the fact that at the end of the day, we\u2019re talking about children, whether it\u2019s children with special needs, whether it\u2019s children in our elementary schools, whether it\u2019s our Native students \u2014 making sure that we don\u2019t lose that focus,\u201d Murkowski agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trump administration has initiated agreements with other federal departments to manage education programs in the absence of congressional approval to shut the agency down,\u201d Politico reported<\/a>. \u201c<\/b>Education Secretary Linda McMahon has called these deals \u2018proofs of concept\u2019 to show lawmakers how other federal departments can handle education responsibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Education Department press secretary Savannah Newhouse issued a statement condemning the \u201csabotage\u201d of the effort.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecretary McMahon promised Congress a proof of concept that is currently underway and delivering results across our partner agencies, and it is entirely premature to sabotage this effort before it has the chance to eliminate bureaucratic barriers and fully deliver the results that our students, families, and educators deserve,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
