In what security analysts are calling the largest single-day mass border breach in European history, nearly 60,000 migrants — predominantly military-aged men — stormed Spain’s tiny North African exclave of Ceuta from Morocco on Thursday and Friday, according to The National News. At least 67 people died in the attempt, per Spanish government officials — some drowned, others killed in stampedes on the breakwater. The enclave’s entire population is roughly 85,000 people. In less than 48 hours, a population equivalent arrived illegally.

The breach exposed the catastrophic consequences of Spain’s socialist government under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, whose administration has spent years promoting permissive migration policies and opposing border hardening along the EU’s only land border with Africa. Videos circulating on X showed hundreds of men running through military barriers, arriving by boat, and surging over the breakwater fence into the sea. Moroccan forces deployed water cannon trucks at crossing gates in a belated attempt to hold back the crowds, according to The Independent, but the sheer scale of the surge overwhelmed them. The U.S. State Department placed responsibility squarely on Madrid: “This unacceptable incident is the direct result of the Spanish Government’s deliberate efforts to enable and facilitate mass illegal migration into Europe,” the department said Friday.

President Trump called it a “catastrophe” at a Cabinet meeting, warning that the same scenario would unfold in the United States if Democrats were to regain power. “Hundreds of thousands of people. And that same thing’s going to happen to us if the Republicans don’t get elected, except worse, much bigger, much easier to get into,” Trump said. The comparison is not rhetorical — it is operational. The same NGO-aided trafficking networks, the same deliberate policy of enforcement non-enforcement, the same open-borders ideology at work in Ceuta has governed Democratic administrations in Washington.

Italy’s response was swift and sovereign. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced Thursday night that Italy was suspending the EU’s Schengen free-movement agreement with Spain — closing air and sea borders between the two countries effective through August, per Euronews. Deputy Prime Ministers Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini backed the move. “The temporary suspension of Schengen with Spain is a necessary choice to safeguard the security of our citizens and defend the European borders,” Tajani wrote on X. France simultaneously announced enhanced controls along its land border with Spain. Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark, the Czech Republic, and Sweden publicly backed Italy’s position.

Madrid pushed back defiantly. Sánchez, facing a general election campaign, called for “a strong and united European Union” and accused Italy of violating the spirit of European cooperation — even as his government’s policies directly precipitated the crisis. Spain’s foreign ministry summoned Italy’s ambassador for explanations. But the political fault lines now exposed within the EU are not going away. The Ceuta debacle has given Marine Le Pen’s National Rally in France, Germany’s AfD, and UK Reform enormous political ammunition — each praised Meloni’s move publicly.

By Saturday morning, Spanish troops were escorting exhausted migrants who waded onto Ceuta’s Tarajal beach back across the border. Spain announced it would install a 500-meter containment barrier along the breakwater fence into the sea. The interior ministry reported that the majority of those who entered had already voluntarily returned to Morocco, per AP. But the damage to the open-borders ideology — and to Sánchez’s government — is permanent. The Federalist observed that the Ceuta crisis demonstrates how quickly a sovereign border can be overrun when a government chooses not to defend it, and how little time a democracy has to respond before the breach becomes irreversible. Europe is learning that lesson the hard way, in real time.

‘NO AD’ subscription for CDM!
