The New Jersey Police Department came up with a clever way to bust distracted drivers \u2014 or did they?<\/p>\n

There was a mixed reaction to a story about a Dunellen police officer who was disguised as a shrub while watching for drivers distracted by their phones.<\/p>\n

The idea was part of a six-hour operation \u201cmeant to enforce the state\u2019s cellphone law and promote safety,\u201d the New York Post reported.<\/p>\n

And it worked.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur \u2018shrub\u2019 was busy. We issued 74 citations to drivers distracted by their devices in a six-hour window,\u201d the department wrote in a statement. The citations come with hefty fines of $200 \u2013 $400 for first-time offenders.<\/p>\n

The Dunellen Police Department posted the successful operation to its Facebook, where it got plenty of feedback, and of course, snark.<\/p>\n

\u201cNice. Now if you need someone to cross the street so you can grab people who ignore pedestrians in crosswalks, I\u2019m in. I\u2019ll even wear a safety green NOT A COP shirt if you want,\u201d one wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s next\u2026hiding behind a billboard?\u201d another quipped.<\/p>\n

Reaction on X was mixed too:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe law prohibits drivers from using a handheld cellphone or device \u2014 resulting in fines of $200 to $400 for a first offense.\u201d That\u2019s nice what about the police that I see doing it all the time<\/p>\n
