Two top Democrat figures with ties to the Obamas and the Clintons aimed fire at radical New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani this week.<\/p>\n

The first one was former Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. Appearing on the \u201cUnholy Podcast,\u201d he recalled a brief conversation he recently had with Mamdani about the mayor\u2019s radical views pertaining to Israel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018Look, you are your father\u2019s son, I\u2019m my father\u2019s son. You chant \u2018a river to the sea,\u2019 and that means there will never be a Jewish homeland for Jews who have faced the Holocaust,’\u201d he recalled. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018I want you to hear this: over my dead body.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s team has since cast doubt on Emanuel\u2019s story.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t clear whether she meant that the conversation\/meeting never occurred or she meant that Emanuel\u2019s characterization of the conversation was incorrect.<\/p>\n

Emanuel\u2019s remarks on the \u201cUnholy Podcast\u201d came a day after he posted a tweet bashing the so-called Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can be focused on winning tough races, flipping red seats blue. Or you can be focused on abolishing prisons and\u2026 the Senate and Supreme Court? You can\u2019t do both,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m for winning this November and ending Trump\u2019s corruption \u2014 and I\u2019m also for putting an end to all the distractions from the DSA,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

This week, former Clinton adviser Mark Penn also went after Mamdani, targeting him specifically for his proposed property tax (or pied-\u00e0-terre tax) on second homes.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the week, Mamdani released a list of 960,000 New York City property owners who might owe the tax, which was supposed to only target owners of properties worth $5 million or more.<\/p>\n

But according to Penn, the there are only about a million residential tax lots in the city, meaning almost every property owner in NYC wound up on Mamdani\u2019s hit list. The reality is that the NYC Department of Finance\u2019s $5 million number was very, very misleading \u2014 and potentially wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, here is the interesting part \u2014 once you are on the list you have to prove you should not be taxed by showing you are a resident,\u201d Penn wrote in a tweet. \u201cOr by challenging the valuation. Good luck fighting the city bureaucrats on both of these counts. The individual litigation will be massive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor Mamdani with fanfare released a list of 960,000 owners of real estate in New York City that have been determined they could owe the pied a terre tax because NYC computers have determined they own what was billed as a market value of $5 million or\u2026<\/p>\n

Penn continued by arguing that the tax will hit many ordinary property owners, scare off non-resident buyers, impose large unexpected bills even on purpose with mortgages and little equity, and amount to \u201ctaxation without representation\u201d since non-residents can\u2019t vote.<\/p>\n

Penn concluded his lengthy post by calling it a classic\u00a0socialist bait-and-switch: it was sold as hitting only a small group of the ultra-rich, but the list ballooned to nearly a million.<\/p>\n

\u201c[W]elcome to the lie of socialism \u2013 it starts with the idea that only \u2018they\u2019 are going to get it \u2014 a small group of 30,000 homeowners \u2014 and before you know it you are on the list,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Despite all this, Mamdani continues to defend the tax.<\/p>\n

\u201cMayor Zohran Mamdani defended the rollout of a new tax on highly valued second homes in New York City, saying only property owners who receive a letter from city officials will be impacted by the levy,\u201d Bloomberg<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n
