{"id":643742,"date":"2026-07-30T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=643742"},"modified":"2026-07-30T09:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T09:00:00","slug":"uk-regulator-targets-data-center-land-grab-on-the-power-grid-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=643742","title":{"rendered":"UK Regulator Targets Data-Center Land-Grab On The Power Grid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">UK Regulator Targets Data-Center Land-Grab On The Power Grid<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/UK-Regulator-Targets-Data-Center-Land-Grab-on-the-Power-Grid.html\"><em>Authored by Tsvetana Paraskova via OilPrice.com,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Britain\u2019s energy regulator, Ofgem, on Wednesday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofgem.gov.uk\/press-release\/ofgem-acts-free-grid-capacity-tackling-speculative-data-centre-projects\">launched<\/a>\u00a0a consultation on a proposed commitment fee for data center projects as part of broad reforms to ensure network capacity is used for projects that are ready and able to connect.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/935cf150-7903-11f0-8815-0b32e54e.jpg?itok=XHmsqV2Y\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/935cf150-7903-11f0-8815-0b32e54e.jpg?itok=XHmsqV2Y\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"ffea45ed-f477-4845-bcd2-e3672af3371a\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"281\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/935cf150-7903-11f0-8815-0b32e54e.jpg?itok=XHmsqV2Y\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The proposal includes a new Data Centre Commitment Fee, which would be paid by large data center developments when accepting a connection offer, Ofgem said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The fee would be refunded when the project reaches grid connection status and forfeited if the project exits the grid queue early.\u00a0 The fee would be set within a proposed range of \u00a3237,500 to \u00a3712,500 per megawatt (MW), equivalent to around 2.5% to 7.5% of average project costs.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cThe proposals are aimed at tackling speculative projects from securing scarce network capacity without any firm intention to connect, ensuring the queue enables investment ready, viable projects,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Ofgem said.<\/p>\n<p>Plans for a commitment fee for data centers were drawn up after the UK saw a surge in connection applications in the past two years, driven largely by demand from data center projects.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOfgem is concerned that a significant number of projects in the queue may not ultimately proceed, <strong>potentially delaying viable developments and creating misleading signals about future network investment needs<\/strong>,\u201d the regulator said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last year, Ofgem approved an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/UK-Regulator-Approves-33-Billion-Investment-in-Gas-and-Power-Grids.html\">investment program<\/a>\u00a0of $32 billion (\u00a324 billion) to maintain essential gas distribution networks and expand the power grid in a move to boost energy security and allow more renewables to enter the electricity system.<\/p>\n<p>However, demand and applications for connections have soared over the past year, mostly driven by plans for data centers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe connections system must work for consumers and for the projects that are ready to invest, build and connect,\u201d said Eleanor Warburton, Ofgem\u2019s Director for Energy System Design and Development.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cWhere speculative projects take up space in the queue, they can delay other schemes and create uncertainty about future network needs,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>the official added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>      <span class=\"field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden\"><a title=\"View user profile.\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/users\/tyler-durden\" lang=\"\" class=\"username\" xml:lang=\"\">Tyler Durden<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden\">Thu, 07\/30\/2026 &#8211;
