The ‘Southern Front’ Of The Ukrainian Conflict Is Heating Up<\/span><\/p>\n

The most recent phase of the\u00a0Ukrainian Conflict<\/a>\u00a0has been characterized by the \u201cwar of attrition<\/a>\u201d that the US has been waging against Russia through Ukraine after Trump decided to \u201cescalate to de-escalate<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

This has thus far taken the form of drone strikes against energy infrastructure,\u00a0online retailers<\/a>, and maritime shipping in the Black, Azov, and now even the Caspian Seas.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s this last-mentioned aspect that forms the basis of the present analysis following Ukraine\u2019s weekend strikes on targets in the Caspian.<\/p>\n

According to Ukrainian sources<\/a>, their forces struck an offshore oil extraction platform, a cargo ship and cargo vessel that were sanctioned for their alleged role in the Russian-Iranian arms trade, and a missile boat.<\/strong> If confirmed, then this represents the most eastward expansion yet of Ukraine\u2019s campaign against Russia\u2019s maritime shipping after\u00a0attacking its Black Sea Fleet over the years<\/a>\u00a0and recently\u00a0causing enough chaos<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0suspend shipping in the Sea of Azov<\/a>, which is linked to the Caspian by the\u00a0Volga-Don Canal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Of relevance, some of the oil that Russia produces there is shipped across that canal en route to Crimea and the global market, so targeting Caspian oil extraction platforms and suspending shipping in the Sea of Azov are part of a larger strategy. The plan appears to be to slash the Kremlin\u2019s revenue, cause domestic fuel shortages with a view towards provoking political unrest, and exacerbate the attempted drone-enforced \u201cblockade\u201d of Crimea. This broad \u201csouthern front\u201d is therefore very significant.<\/p>\n

Casual observers from the West might thus be under the impression that the Ukrainian Conflict\u2019s overall dynamics have shifted in Kiev\u2019s favor as a result of the above-mentioned developments<\/strong>, but they\u2019d do well to know that Russia has drastically ramped up its strikes\u00a0against Ukraine\u2019s Black Sea infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This recently resulted in Ukraine\u00a0suspending shipping<\/a>\u00a0across that naval corridor for the first time since 2023 in the most important achievement thus far of Russia\u2019s\u00a0new \u201csystematic strike\u201d campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0Odessa<\/a>\u00a0remains out of Moscow\u2019s reach, and there was never any attempt to capture it since the\u00a0special<\/a>\u00a0operation<\/a>\u00a0began, the recent attacks against its infrastructure are clearly meant to demilitarize it (at least for now).<\/strong> After all, it\u2019s from Odessa that Ukraine launches its naval drones against Russia\u2019s Black Sea Fleet, and it\u2019s also where Ukraine receives some of its maritime arms imports. It\u2019s therefore arguably long overdue for Russia to take its port out of operation as well as all of Ukraine\u2019s other Black Sea ones.<\/p>\n

The radical intensification of the southern front could lead to one of three outcomes: <\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \n

    the situation continues to worsen;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    a partial ceasefire is reached for ending attacks against ships and maritime infrastructure (though it\u2019s unclear whether it would apply to Crimea);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    or NATO gets involved.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    As regards the last-mentioned, it\u2019s the least likely but still can\u2019t be ruled out after Turkiye committed to providing\u00a0maritime security guarantees<\/a>\u00a0for Ukraine, which could hypothetically take the form of \u201cescort missions\u201d.<\/p>\n

    The larger trend is that US-backed Ukraine\u2019s newfound focus on targeting Russia\u2019s \u201csoft underbelly\u201d in this new \u201cwar of attrition\u201d has resulted in its own \u201csoft underbelly\u201d being targeted as well as a form of (arguably long-overdue) reciprocal retaliation that\u2019s making the broader Black Sea region a \u201cno-go zone\u201d.<\/p>\n

    The heightened stakes associated with this latest phase of the conflict suggest that an even greater escalation might be inevitable, but it\u2019s still possible that this could be delayed, if not outright averted.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
