After a columnist accused her fans of being racists, USA Today allowed an editor to publish a bogus claim about Clark missing a WNBA event \u201cto get her hair done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Posted Friday morning and still live at the time of this writing \u2014 complete with a community note \u2014 USA Today shared an article from Heather Burns with the caption, \u201cCaitlin Clark skipped the WNBA Orange Carpet on Thursday, opting to get her hair done in her hometown of Des Moines.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Caitlin Clark skipped the WNBA Orange Carpet on Thursday, opting for foundation event in Des Moines. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xeQ7PR8uBf\">https:\/\/t.co\/xeQ7PR8uBf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 USA TODAY (@USATODAY) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/USATODAY\/status\/2080709651235033545?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 24, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Included in the piece was an Instagram post from Clark\u2019s hairdresser, now featured beneath the actual reason that she was in Iowa while her fellow all-stars were in Chicago: she was participating in an event for her Caitlin Clark Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>That reality was tacked onto the original post Friday afternoon as USA Today delivered a \u201cclarification\u201d rather than a correction to blatant misrepresentation of the point guard\u2019s priorities, writing, \u201cCaitlin Clark was attending an event for the Caitlin Clark Foundation, which is why she missed the WNBA All-Star Weekend Orange Carpet.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Clarification: Caitlin Clark was attending an event for the Caitlin Clark Foundation, which is why she missed the WNBA All-Star Weekend Orange Carpet.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 USA TODAY (@USATODAY) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/USATODAY\/status\/2080706812928749849?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 24, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The knock against Clark came quickly on the heels of an op-ed from columnist Nancy Armour that also needed an update for \u201cfurther context and clarity\u201d after Armour drew a comparison of the outrage and backlash against the league to Till.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than recognize the failure of the league in addressing the abuse perpetrated against Clark on the court, including a suspension-inducing throat punch that found the Phoenix Mercury <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizpacreview.com\/2026\/06\/26\/wmba-team-deletes-meme-allegedly-mocking-kaitlyn-clark-getting-throat-punched-on-court-1648073\/\">scrubbing<\/a> its own mockery of the Fever player, Armour likened specific fan disapproval of the WNBA and black players to the lynching of the 14-year-old in 1955 Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems there is a white nationalist element to Clark\u2019s fandom that is deeply, deeply problematic, made even more so because the WNBA is made of predominantly Black women, many of them queer,\u201d wrote the columnist. \u201cWhen Clark claims fouls that don\u2019t exist, when she goes on profanity-laced tirades at referees, those racists see her as a white woman in need of saving and take matters into their own hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Armour provided an anecdote about a fan being fired for allegedly sending a message to a player with a racial slur before adding,\u00a0\u201cIt shouldn\u2019t need reminding this country has an awful history of Black people being harmed, even killed, in the name of \u2018defending\u2019 white women. The WNBA\u2019s All-Star Game this weekend is in Chicago, Emmett Till\u2019s hometown, and a local art gallery is currently hosting an exhibit imagining his life if he hadn\u2019t been lynched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it\u2019s incumbent on the WNBA to do more to protect its players, there also should be an expectation on Clark to recognize the wider consequences of her actions,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Following outrage that included calls for her termination, Armour released a statement that read,\u00a0\u201cIn my recent column, I made an inartful comparison with the murder of Emmett Till. I intended to connect the issues the WNBA is currently facing with its All-Star Game being hosted in Till\u2019s hometown of Chicago. Players have been abused online and have reported receiving death threats. That has to be taken more seriously.
