The war with Iran has depleted Pentagon funding, and the shock to the oil economy will have a direct impact on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/07\/21\/iran-hormuz-global-hunger-un\/\">fertilizer<\/a>\u00a0market farmers depend on.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Hegseth defended the supplemental funding and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/4551668\/hegseth-caine-testify-in-support-of-supplemental-budget-request\/\">claimed it would be part of the Pentagon\u2019s FY27 budget<\/a>, not in addition to it. Congress has yet to approve the $1.5 trillion the Pentagon wants.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2026\/07\/22\/house-passes-115-trillion-defense-bill-tees-up-billions-more-iran-war\/\">House of Representatives<\/a>\u00a0<strong>voted to authorize $1.15 trillion of the massive military budget<\/strong>, but the Senate has yet to approve it.<\/p>\n<p>There is no guarantee the Republican-controlled Senate will sign off on the funding. Democrats have generally opposed the funding on party lines (only\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/22\/house-republicans-pass-defense-bill-01008493\">six<\/a>\u00a0democrats in the House voted for it) and even Republican senators have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/clip\/senate-committee\/senators-mcconnell-collins-rule-out-third-reconciliation-bill-for-defense-funding\/5201360\">balked<\/a>\u00a0at the massive price tag.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\">Pete Hegseth: Not funding this department at $1.5 trillion is the greatest threat our nation faces. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/j2AvDMdpzg\">pic.twitter.com\/j2AvDMdpzg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Acyn (@Acyn) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Acyn\/status\/2079647681950134505?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 21, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hegseth characterized the full budgetary request as a &#8220;generational investment&#8221; and claimed the supplemental funding was of the utmost\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/4551668\/hegseth-caine-testify-in-support-of-supplemental-budget-request\/\">importance:<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As you know, we live in a dangerous world that requires bold and swift action. Hence, this supplemental request for fiscal year 2026.
