{"id":640474,"date":"2026-07-24T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=640474"},"modified":"2026-07-24T03:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T03:00:00","slug":"china-plans-planetary-defense-test-by-slamming-mach-26-spacecraft-into-asteroid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=640474","title":{"rendered":"China Plans Planetary Defense Test By Slamming Mach 26 Spacecraft Into Asteroid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">China Plans Planetary Defense Test By Slamming Mach 26 Spacecraft Into Asteroid <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>A new paper under peer review by the Chinese-language Journal of Deep Space Exploration lays out an ambitious plan to crash a spacecraft at Mach 26, or 20,000 mph, into a near-Earth asteroid to test new planetary defenses.<\/p>\n<p>The South China Morning Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3360752\/china-plans-hit-asteroid-mach-26-projectile-planet-defence-test\">reports<\/a> that a team led by Li Mingtao, chief scientist for planetary defense at the China National Space Administration, is planning a mission even more ambitious than NASA\u2019s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART).<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2026-07-22_14-03-19.png?itok=LLdmGfqP\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2026-07-22_14-03-19.png?itok=LLdmGfqP\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"5031b9ed-6f9b-4582-9cc4-7224d4ff8ad8\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"373\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/2026-07-22_14-03-19.png?itok=LLdmGfqP\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That mission would slam a spacecraft into 2015 XF261, an asteroid estimated to be about 30 meters wide, in either 2029 or 2030.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dart was the first to demonstrate asteroid deflection by kinetic impact in space, but it did not directly change an asteroid&#8217;s orbit around the sun relative to Earth, making it different from a real planetary-defense scenario,&#8221; the researchers wrote in the report.<\/p>\n<p>The planned impact would be nearly 50% faster than NASA\u2019s 2022 DART, which hit the asteroid Dimorphos at 6.1 kilometers per second, or about Mach 18.<\/p>\n<p>According to the paper, the mission calls for two spacecraft: one interceptor and one observation spacecraft, which would use a Venus gravity assist before rendezvousing with the target. It would deploy a small probe to monitor the collision and measure changes to the asteroid&#8217;s orbit, shape, surface, and internal structure.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2026-07-22_14-03-57.png?itok=VF2ySiw5\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2026-07-22_14-03-57.png?itok=VF2ySiw5\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"a21064e0-9b32-4d46-ad1a-6ebb1f0ef72a\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"222\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/2026-07-22_14-03-57.png?itok=VF2ySiw5\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Focusing on China&#8217;s first asteroid-defense demonstration and verification mission, planned for implementation before 2030, this paper systematically reviews the frontier scientific questions in kinetic-impact asteroid defense to support mission design, implementation, and preliminary scientific research,&#8221; the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>If successful, the test would become China&#8217;s first end-to-end demonstration of an operational planetary-defense system.
