This marked a 30-year high not seen since before former Mayor Rudy Giuliani enacted welfare reform in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n<p>Combined, the nearly one million welfare recipients collected $2.6 billion in taxpayer funds last year, up 71 percent from the $1.57 billion collected in 2022.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u2013 : ,<\/p>\n<p>New York City just quietly blew past a benchmark it hasn\u2019t touched in three decades. On June 1, his office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayors-office\/news\/2026\/06\/mayor-mamdani-helps-223-000-new-yorkers-maintain-access-to-food-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted a note<\/a> celebrating how he\u2019d supposedly helped \u201c223,000 New Yorkers maintain access to\u201d Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.<\/p>\n<p>His office also vowed to get even more people on the dole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeginning this month, the administration is expanding a citywide canvassing and phone-banking effort to reach the remaining New Yorkers still at risk of losing food assistance,\u201d the office noted.<\/p>\n<p>The office also attacked the One Big Beautiful Bill Act for daring to kick lazy able-bodied adults off federal welfare assistance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal legislation known as H.R. 1 is one of the most significant attacks on the social safety net in recent memory,\u201d they wrote. \u201cThe law eliminated automatic work requirement exemptions for homeless people, veterans and young adults formerly in foster care. These changes do not address unemployment; they make it harder for people to access food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani personally issued a statement also decrying the bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood stamp work requirements don\u2019t create jobs, they create hunger,\u201d he alleged. \u201cIf the federal government wanted to help people find work, it would invest in public jobs programs and guarantee a living wage. Instead, it\u2019s punishing people who are already struggling to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere in New York, we refuse to stand by while Washington takes food away from our families. Work or starve? Nah. Work and eat like the rest of us, champ,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work requirement is 20 [hours] PER WEEK,\u201d another critic <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/levy4535\/status\/2057132161547776437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cPeople over 65, people with dependents &amp; the disabled are exempt.
