Lebanese President Joseph Aoun arrived in Washington on Sunday for a high-stakes visit to the White House \u2014 the first by a Lebanese head of state in 17 years, The National reported. He is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump on Tuesday, after holding initial consultations with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday. The last Lebanese president to visit the White House was Michel Suleiman, who met Barack Obama in 2009, per the Jerusalem Post.<\/p>\n

Aoun, who served as commander of Lebanon’s US-backed army before his election to the presidency last year, is arriving with two core demands: that Washington press Israel to implement the framework agreement signed on June 26 \u2014 which calls for Israeli troop withdrawal from two “pilot zones” in southern Lebanon \u2014 and that the US back Lebanon’s sovereign authority over its own territory, including disarming Hezbollah and placing all arms under the Lebanese Armed Forces, The National and Jpost reported.<\/p>\n

The visit follows two days of US-mediated talks in Rome that ended without a timetable for implementation, according to The National. Israel has been accused by Lebanese officials of stalling on the pilot zone withdrawals. Aoun is also pressing for a reconstruction and relief package after large areas of southern Lebanon were devastated by Israeli strikes \u2014 at least 4,250 people have been killed in Lebanon since March, and about one million displaced, by Lebanon’s own government figures.<\/p>\n

The framing of this visit requires care. Aoun’s sovereignty agenda \u2014 disarmament of Hezbollah, Israeli withdrawal, all arms under the Lebanese state \u2014 is a fundamentally different demand from Hezbollah’s own position. The Free Patriotic Movement, Lebanon’s largest Christian party, has long championed this sovereignty case: the goal is Lebanese state authority over all armed actors on Lebanese soil, not the preservation of any militia’s weapons. Aoun is pressing the same case from the presidency. That distinction matters in a Washington debate that tends to flatten “anti-Israel-withdrawal” voices into a single pro-Iran block.<\/p>\n

Whether Trump can \u2014 or will \u2014 press Israel hard enough to actually withdraw is another question. The framework agreement exists on paper. Rome talks produced no timetable. Israel’s track record on southern Lebanon withdrawals is what it is. A Lebanese official told The National that Aoun “believes President Trump is uniquely positioned to persuade Israel” \u2014 which may be the diplomatic framing of a very thin hope.<\/p>\n

The broader context: key Arab states are cycling through Washington this month. The Iraqi prime minister visited last week. Trump met the Syrian president in Turkey earlier this month. Lebanon is last in the queue \u2014 arriving amid the worst regional crisis since 2006, with Iran under US bombardment and Hezbollah’s Iranian patron simultaneously under fire. For Lebanon’s Christians and ordinary citizens, the stakes of this particular meeting could not be higher.<\/p>\n
