WASHINGTON<\/strong> \u2014 President Donald Trump pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a Thursday phone call to begin redeploying Israeli troops out of Syria and to take similar steps in Lebanon, according to U.S. and Israeli officials, reported Axios.<\/p>\n

Trump told Netanyahu that Israel\u2019s military presence in Syrian territory is fueling tensions and could trigger escalation, a U.S. official familiar with the conversation told Axios. \u201cThey don\u2019t want you there. You should redeploy,\u201d Trump said, with the same message applying to Lebanon.<\/p>\n

The call came one day after Trump met Syrian leader Ahmad al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Turkey. For months, the Trump administration has tried to broker a new security arrangement between Israel and Syria following the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024. Those efforts have stalled, in part because Netanyahu has been reluctant to withdraw from territory Israeli forces now occupy.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu\u2019s office said the prime minister stressed the need for security zones along Israel\u2019s borders. Three months before a critical election that could determine his political future, analysts say Netanyahu is unlikely to make significant territorial concessions, reported Axios.<\/p>\n

Occupied territories remain flashpointsThe Israel Defense Forces currently control large areas of southern Lebanon and southern Syria. Israeli officials argue the presence is essential to prevent attacks resembling the October 7, 2023, Hamas assault. Some members of Netanyahu\u2019s government advocate for indefinite control or even the establishment of settlements in those regions.<\/p>\n

Recent weeks have seen protests and clashes in southern Syria involving local residents and Israeli soldiers, highlighting growing friction over the occupation.<\/p>\n

Separately, U.S. mediators met with Israeli and Lebanese diplomats in Rome on Tuesday to discuss implementation of a framework agreement signed several weeks ago. Under that deal, Israel agreed to withdraw from two initial \u201cpilot zones\u201d in southern Lebanon so the Lebanese army can deploy there.<\/p>\n

The IDF has not yet pulled back from those zones. Lebanese officials are pressing for a clear timetable for further withdrawals, while Israel says it first needs verification that the areas are clear of Hezbollah weapons and infrastructure. The two sides disagree on who should make that determination.<\/p>\n

The White House declined to comment on the Trump-Netanyahu call but did not dispute the account. A U.S. official described Trump as \u201ca fighter for peace\u201d and a steadfast friend to Israel.<\/p>\n
