President Donald J. Trump capitalized on the landmark Supreme Court ruling granting him more power to fire members of independent agencies at will, setting his sights on the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC).<\/p>\n

The EAC bills itself as \u201can independent, bipartisan commission whose mission is to help election officials improve the administration of elections and help Americans participate in the voting process.\u201d The agency is also responsible for maintaining the national mail voter registration form developed in accordance with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.<\/p>\n

Bipartisan or not, given the state of our elections today, it\u2019s an easy argument to suggest the agency is not helping.<\/p>\n

Thomas Hicks and Christy McCormick, who were appointed to the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) by former President Barack Obama, were fired via email, according to Reuters. Benjamin Hovland, appointed by Trump in his first term, was forced to resign. A fourth commissioner at the agency, a Trump appointee, departed in April.<\/p>\n

The terminations leave the bipartisan EAC with no commissioners and an uncertain future. It\u2019s unclear if Trump will move to appoint new members to the commission.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position \u200bas Commissioner of the Election Assistance Commission is terminated, effective immediately. Thank you for your service,\u201d read the emails sent out by the White House Presidential Personnel Office.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

A White House official told Reuters that Trump \u201creserves the right to remove individuals that may not be totally aligned with the important task \u200bof securing America\u2019s elections and ensuring every legal vote is counted.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president praised the recent Supreme Court ruling, declaring on Truth Social it was \u201cthe Greatest Increase in Presidential Power in the last 100 years. Such a Monumental Ruling at such an important time!\u201d<\/p>\n
