{"id":632591,"date":"2026-07-09T07:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T07:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=632591"},"modified":"2026-07-09T07:30:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T07:30:00","slug":"trump-to-delist-syria-from-terror-designation-boasts-of-putting-fantastic-sharaa-in-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=632591","title":{"rendered":"Trump To Delist Syria From Terror Designation, Boasts Of Putting &#8216;Fantastic&#8217; Sharaa In Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Trump To Delist Syria From Terror Designation, Boasts Of Putting &#8216;Fantastic&#8217; Sharaa In Power<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/trump-lavishes-praise-fantastic-and-highly-respected-sharaa\"><em>Via Middle East Eye<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>US\u00a0President Donald Trump lavished rare praise on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Wednesday, calling him &#8220;fantastic&#8221; and &#8220;highly respected&#8221;, as the two leaders met on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara,\u00a0Turkey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The meeting itself is a win for Sharaa, who was first introduced to Trump a little over a year ago in Riyadh,\u00a0Saudi Arabia, before finding himself in the Oval Office exchanging gifts with the US president by November.\u00a0<strong>No Syrian leader &#8211; and certainly not one with Sharaa&#8217;s past as a US-designated terrorist &#8211; had been in the White House in decades<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/jolanitrumpfile.jpg?itok=zC6ugx41\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/jolanitrumpfile.jpg?itok=zC6ugx41\"><\/a><\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"8166caba-4b15-4bc3-9a57-76a4a22465a4\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/jolanitrumpfile.jpg?itok=zC6ugx41\" width=\"500\" \/><figcaption><em>via Reuters<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Wednesday&#8217;s opportunity arose because the Turks have been at the helm of Sharaa&#8217;s rise to power since December 2024, as they are keen on a neighboring Syria that falls within their sphere of influence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s swift embrace of Sharaa has been one of the standout foreign policy moves of the past year. &#8220;He&#8217;s done a really fantastic job as president. He&#8217;s unified the country in a very short period of time. I&#8217;d say like a year and a half, about a year and a half, and right from the beginning it was a real mess, very disjointed place, and he&#8217;s brought it together,&#8221; Trump told reporters as he sat next to Sharaa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s a strong person. He&#8217;s a great leader. He&#8217;s respected by everybody, including me, and <strong>we&#8217;re proud to have him<\/strong>,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>The sentiments are in stark contrast to how Trump has spoken about Washington&#8217;s traditional allies, most of whom form the very defensive alliance that this summit is about. He has repeatedly berated the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, and Spain as being weak on defence and immigration, attacked Denmark for asserting its sovereignty over Greenland, and is currently in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/trump-reignites-feud-italy-meloni-restraining-order-12160062\" target=\"_blank\">open feud<\/a>\u00a0with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since March, Trump has ramped up his rhetoric against those countries not joining his war on\u00a0Iran.<\/p>\n<h2>Removing terror designation<\/h2>\n<p>Fourteen months ago, Sharaa, who <strong>previously had a $10m bounty on his head in the US<\/strong>, saw Trump announce the historic lifting of economic sanctions on Syria.\u00a0The move was largely orchestrated by the Saudis, with much of the funding to rebuild Syria in a new image coming from Gulf nations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What remains now is to get Syria off the US State Sponsors of Terrorism (SST) list and allow for investment in the country, which is the key agenda item for Sharaa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Any problems with that?&#8221; Trump said, as he turned to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. &#8220;I think we should. Yeah,&#8221; the president added<\/strong>. &#8220;We&#8217;re proud of the job he&#8217;s doing. Syria has become very stable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\">Trump Again Says Syria Could Help Israel Fight Hezbollah In Lebanon<\/p>\n<p>This time he repeats the line in front of the new Syrian regime\u2019s leader Ahmed al-Shara\u2019a, who Trump brags about putting in power. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eckoW1KorA\">pic.twitter.com\/eckoW1KorA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 MintPress News (@MintPressNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MintPressNews\/status\/2074872290337030623?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 8, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Trump was asked by a reporter about his highly contentious suggestion last month of having Syria take on the role of disarming Hezbollah in Lebanon. &#8220;They could help. We&#8217;ll find out.
