Buyers of Iranian oil have until July 17 to wind down transactions already in progress. The license had been a central economic incentive in the June Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which launched a 60-day negotiating window between Washington and Tehran.

Within hours of the Treasury announcement, U.S. Central Command confirmed it had launched retaliatory strikes against Iran.

“We launched a series of powerful strikes against Iran to impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping crewed by innocent civilians in an international waterway,” CENTCOM said in a statement Tuesday, describing the Iranian attacks as “a clear violation of the ceasefire.”

U.S. Central Command forces have begun launching a series of powerful strikes against Iran to impose heavy costs for targeting and attacking commercial shipping crewed by innocent civilians in an international waterway. Among the confirmed targets was the Saudi tanker Wedyan. Saudi Arabia condemned the attack, calling it “an assault on the security and safety of international navigation, and on the security of global energy supplies.”

The UK Maritime Trade Operations authority (UKMTO) confirmed a second vessel was struck Tuesday by an unidentified projectile while transiting the Strait, sustaining structural damage. A third vessel was also reported struck, with a fire on board, though no fatalities were immediately confirmed.

The attacks came after President Trump said the U.S. had given Tehran “a week off” during funeral ceremonies for slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — a period Iran reportedly used to resume attacks on commercial shipping.

Markets React

Oil futures jumped immediately on the news. Brent crude surged 5.5% to approximately $76 per barrel for September delivery. West Texas Intermediate climbed more than 5% to just over $72 per barrel. Both benchmarks remain well below the $100-plus peaks reached in late March and early April during the height of U.S.-Iran hostilities.

The Deal Is Performance-Based

The Islamabad MOU, signed June 17 by U.S. and Iranian officials, established a 60-day framework under which Iran agreed to halt attacks and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping. In exchange, Washington offered limited sanctions relief, including the oil waiver. The deal was described by the administration as entirely contingent on Iranian behavior.

“As President Trump and the administration have repeatedly affirmed, the MOU in effect with Iran is entirely performance-based,” a U.S. official told CBS News. “Iran will only reap benefits if they exhibit good behavior. Iran’s actions in the Strait were wholly unacceptable to the United States and will be met with consequences. Our negotiators continue to work in good faith towards a final deal.”

The Ceasefire In Jeopardy

Tuesday’s escalation raises serious questions about whether the 60-day negotiating window can survive. Iran’s decision to resume tanker attacks — the very provocation that triggered the original U.S. military campaign — signals either a deliberate test of American resolve or a breakdown in command-and-control within the Iranian military apparatus.

With the oil license revoked and CENTCOM strikes now on the board, the path back to negotiations narrows considerably. Global shipping insurers are expected to reassess Hormuz premiums, and any sustained disruption to one of the world’s busiest maritime choke points carries cascading consequences for energy markets from Europe to East Asia.

‘NO AD’ subscription for CDM! Sign up here and support real investigative journalism and help save the republic!

Please Follow us on Truth Social, X , Youtube , Minds, Telegram, Rumble, GETTR, Gab, Instagram WASHINGTON — The Trump administration dealt a two-fisted response to Iran on Tuesday after Iranian forces attacked three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, simultaneously revoking a key oil sanctions waiver and launching military strikes against Iranian targets.
