I don\u2019t even want to think about it. But in reality, things turned out the way they did.\u201d <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/httpssubstack-post-media.s3.amaz%20%2831%29_9.jpg?itok=Ww3ReiHh\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/httpssubstack-post-media.s3.amaz%20%2831%29_9.jpg?itok=Ww3ReiHh\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"0b391fa4-62d9-485e-b1f8-2015bc3dd93a\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"375\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/httpssubstack-post-media.s3.amaz%20%2831%29_9.jpg?itok=Ww3ReiHh\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This came three and a half years after former German Chancellor Angela Merkel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/merkels-admission-that-minsk-was\">admitted<\/a>\u00a0in December 2022 that the Minsk Accords were just a ruse to buy time for Kiev to rearm.<\/p>\n<p>Putin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/russia\/570084-putin-ukraine-operation-explanation\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CWe%20endured%20for,up%20its%20forces.\">famously responded<\/a>\u00a0a month later that <em><strong>\u201cWe endured for a long time, tried to reach an agreement for a long time. But, as it turns out now, we were simply led by the nose, deceived. It\u2019s not the first time this has happened.\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Given that he cautioned Russia\u2019s strategic forecasters\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/voiceofeast.net\/2022\/07\/03\/president-putin-cautioned-russian-strategic-forecasters-against-indulging-in-wishful-thinking\/\">against indulging in \u201cwishful thinking\u201d<\/a>\u00a0during a speech at the headquarters of his country\u2019s Foreign Spy Service in summer 2022, it was widely assumed among \u201cNon-Russian Pro-Russians\u201d that he wouldn\u2019t fall for a similar ruse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lo and behold, that\u2019s precisely what happened after Trump reneged on the \u201cSpirit of Anchorage\u201d,<\/strong> which an RT contributor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/640421-slow-american-retreat-from-europe\/#:~:text=Nevertheless%2C%20the%20attempts,from%20the%20agenda.\">described<\/a>\u00a0as him having agreed to coerce Zelensky into withdrawing from Donbass in exchange for Putin then declaring a ceasefire. It\u2019s a matter of speculation whether Trump intended to dupe Putin or whether he just caught too caught up in retrospect planning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thealtworld.com\/andrew_korybko\/five-takeaways-from-the-us-special-military-operation-in-venezuela\">Maduro\u2019s capture<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/who-won-the-third-gulf-war\">Third<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/israel-didnt-achieve-a-single-one\">Gulf<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/heres-how-iran-pulled-off-the-upset\">War<\/a>. The outcome, nevertheless, is the same since Trump didn\u2019t do what he promised Putin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump is now \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/whys-trump-preparing-to-escalate\">escalating to de-escalate<\/a>\u201d through a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/russia-must-defeat-ukraine-before\">war of attrition<\/a>\u201d because he senses weakness from Russia<\/strong> due to the new \u201ccordon sanitaire\u201d around it and thus believes that strengthening Ukraine\u2019s strike capabilities, imposing more sanctions, and provoking unrest can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/trump-now-seeks-us-control-over-russias\">coerce energy-related concessions<\/a>. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/the-us-plans-to-wage-an-intensified\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>\u00a0reported on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/trump-20s-escalation-strategy-against\">aforementioned three-phase strategy<\/a>\u00a0last fall so Russia would have presumably been aware of it but still maintained hope that Trump would implement his deal with Putin.<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cwishful thinking\u201d has now been shattered after he signed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elysee.fr\/en\/G7evian\/2026\/06\/17\/g7-leaders-statement-on-geopolitical-issues\">G7 joint statement<\/a>\u00a0calling for more arms to Ukraine and sanctions on Russia, which preceded a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/trump-privately-urged-zelensky-to-act-more-boldly-toward-russia\/\">report<\/a>\u00a0that he told Zelensky to act \u201cmore boldly\u201d against Russia after being impressed by its recent US-backed strategic strikes. To be sure, Russia had realized even before this that something was wrong after Putin\u2019s close advisor Yuri Ushakov\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/2133915\">played dumb<\/a>\u00a0about the \u201cSpirit of Anchorage\u201d last month, but now it\u2019s indisputable that it no longer exists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seeing as how there\u2019s no longer any credible hope that Trump will coerce Zelensky into withdrawing from Donbass<\/strong> by cutting off arms, funds, and intel to Ukraine, not even in exchange for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/how-could-a-rapprochement-with-russia\">resource-centric<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/korybko.substack.com\/p\/the-russian-us-new-detente-could\">strategic partnership<\/a>\u00a0with <strong>Russia, only three options remain for Russia. <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><em>It can either decisively \u201cescalate to de-escalate\u201d in its own right to swiftly end the conflict on as many of its terms as possible,<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><em>carry on as usual amidst this new \u201cwar of attrition\u201d at tremendous risk to itself, <\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><em>or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thealtworld.com\/andrew_korybko\/what-are-the-odds-of-russia-agreeing-to-a-three-tiered-ceasefire-enforcement-plan-in-ukraine\">freeze the conflict<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Unless he\u2019s bluffing about \u201cescalating to de-escalate\u201d and abruptly implements his half of the \u201cSpirit of Anchorage\u201d, which is unlikely after all that\u2019s recently happened, then it would mean that the past year since their meeting achieved nothing at all other than getting Russia\u2019s guard down.<\/strong> Even if they agreed on that quid pro quo, however, Russia would have probably kept the same tempo.
