{"id":624160,"date":"2026-06-24T06:45:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T06:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=624160"},"modified":"2026-06-24T06:45:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T06:45:00","slug":"ursula-von-der-leyen-to-visit-armenia-next-week-as-pro-eu-aspirations-ramp-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buglecall.org\/?p=624160","title":{"rendered":"Ursula von der Leyen To Visit Armenia Next Week As Pro-EU Aspirations Ramp Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Ursula von der Leyen To Visit Armenia Next Week As Pro-EU Aspirations Ramp Up<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Brussels is eyeing Armenia as the small Caucasus nation has lately made it&#8217;s pro-EU aspirations known, given just earlier this month Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan&#8217;s party won parliamentary elections, in a vote widely seen as\u00a0<strong>signififying its major pro-Western shift<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Pashinyan had claimed a &#8220;historic victory that will ensure Armenia\u2019s eternity and development&#8221; while also vowing to<strong>\u00a0&#8220;continue the course of rapprochement with the West&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; but while balancing the pursuit of positive relations with Russia.<\/p>\n<p>And now, just days after the result was confirmed, <strong>European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is preparing to travel to Armenia next week<\/strong>,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/ursula-von-der-leyen-plans-armenia-visit-to-show-support-for-pro-eu-government\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Politico<\/a><\/em>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/vndarmnia.jpg?itok=aJdT-gBK\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/vndarmnia.jpg?itok=aJdT-gBK\"><\/a><\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"42425a1b-318a-4b9a-828c-1d311e8d5513\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/vndarmnia.jpg?itok=aJdT-gBK\" width=\"500\" \/><figcaption><em>Image: Prime Minister of Armenia&#8217;s Press Service<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The EU delegation is expected to be high-level, given it will include Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos in a high-profile show of support fo Pashinyan after his pro-European party secured the decisive victory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>We have seen the country under intense and consistent pressure from Russia<\/strong>; a visit would send a strong signal of support, following on from the concrete support already delivered,&#8221; said one EU official working on the prospective trip, as quoted in Politico and Armenian media.<\/p>\n<p>Anonymous EU officials indicated to Politico that the <strong>visit would send the message that &#8220;Europe is here for you<\/strong>.<strong>&#8220;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Notably this will be von der Leyen&#8217;s <strong>second to Armenia in less than two months<\/strong>. The Commission president was in Yerevan just in May for the European Political Community summit, which took place in Yerevan, before participating in the inaugural EU-Armenia summit.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin itself has also pounced on this theme of Armenia as the next potential ground zero for a tug of war with EU\/NATO interests &#8211; a familiar theme which has also been on display in places from Georgia to Ukraine to Moldova.<\/p>\n<p>Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova went so far as to officially allege unfair and illegal tactics unleashed by local authorities on Russia-friendly interests inside Armenia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On June 7, parliamentary elections were held in Armenia in an atmosphere of unprecedented pressure on the opposition and\u00a0<strong>interference from the West, primarily the EU<\/strong>,&#8221; Zakharova\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/2144057\">commented<\/a>\u00a0earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p><em>Russia has been widely seen as &#8216;disappointing&#8217; the Armenian population in the context of the\u00a0Azerbaijan crisis.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Region of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).\u00a0<strong>Former members of the CSTO military alliance were\u00a0Azerbaijan,\u00a0Georgia\u00a0and\u00a0Uzbekistan.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/armeniaruss_0.jpg?itok=1b_ms8vb\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/armeniaruss_0.jpg?itok=1b_ms8vb\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"e00eec5a-5f06-4aad-a281-2cc7bd654de3\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"373\" width=\"500\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/armeniaruss_0.jpg?itok=1b_ms8vb\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Recent years of war between Christian Armenia and its better-armed Muslim neighbor Azerbaijan (which is a secular Republic) has seen tensions ratchet between one-time close allies Armenia and Russia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Armenia has long been a key member of the regional Russian-led bloc, the\u00a0Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
