It forms the basis of the national flag of England and is a component of the Union Jack, the flag of the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s move comes as a response to \u201cOperation Raise the Colours,\u201d a movement centered on British people placing the St. George\u2019s Cross and Union Jack flags in public spaces for patriotic purposes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">They may strip the flags from our streets, but they can never strip the pride from our hearts. For generations yet to come. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/RaisetheColours?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RaisetheColours<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qioTybGmFH\">pic.twitter.com\/qioTybGmFH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Great British PAC (@GreatBritishPAC) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GreatBritishPAC\/status\/1957031965640601613?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 17, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The council initially filed a legal notice to the campaign\/operation in April after receiving complaints \u2014 likely from Muslim migrants \u2014 about an abundance of patriotic flags on the street.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s since upgraded its notice to a formal request to a high court for an injunction on the grounds that the country\u2019s own flags are causing \u201cfear and division\u201d among the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResidents across Oxfordshire, from Adderbury to Wallingford, have complained to the council about safety risks, intimidation and distress linked to this activity,\u201d a council spokesperson said on Wednesday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbnews.com\/news\/oxfordshire-council-union-jacks-raise-the-colours-high-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GB News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ongoing scale and persistence of the behavior by Raise the Colours has created safety risks, caused distress within communities, and led to abuse and intimidation directed at council teams and residents,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p>Members of Raise the Colours have allegedly acted angrily and belligerently toward people who\u2019ve tried, for reasons that remain unclear, to take down their patriotic flags.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of taking down the flags, Oxfordshire County has reportedly already wasted \u00a315,000 (about $20,000) removing over 300 Union and St George\u2019s Cross flags from lampposts.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Liam Walker is one of the few who staunchly oppose this campaign.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">: : <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dLFk3ZtB4q\">https:\/\/t.co\/dLFk3ZtB4q<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7jPM1vgvvf\">pic.twitter.com\/7jPM1vgvvf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Cllr Liam Walker (@_LiamWalker_) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/_LiamWalker_\/status\/2067295091467718993?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 17, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a statement, he suggested the timing of the council\u2019s injunction is linked to the ongoing World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the World Cup now underway, communities across Oxfordshire are coming together to celebrate, support their national teams and enjoy one of the biggest sporting events in the world,\u201d he said. \u201cAgainst that backdrop, many people will struggle to understand why the Council believes this is the appropriate moment to escalate matters further through the courts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also slammed the council for wasting so much money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver many months, the County Council has devoted significant officer time, legal resources and enforcement activity to pursuing action over the installation of unauthorized flags,\u201d he said. \u201cAt a time when councils across the country are facing serious financial pressures, and when local residents expect us to focus relentlessly on delivering essential services, there must be complete transparency about how much has been spent so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former British football coach Harry Redknapp also lashed out at the council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is wrong with these people?\u201d he asked during a podcast appearance. \u201cWe are proud to be British \u2013 that is what we are. Fly your flags, be proud of your country.
