Department of War\/Epoch Times Screenshot<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rao said the renaming came amid a series of recent developments, such as \u201ccooler optics\u201d at the G7 summit in France and the deaths of three Indian sailors in a U.S. strike on an oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military said the vessel had violated its blockade on Iranian ports.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, these and other developments could suggest a shift toward a more transactional phase in U.S.\u2013India relations, she suggested.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cNone of these individually proves a strategic rupture,\u201d Rao wrote. \u201cBut collectively they suggest that the exuberant phase of India\u2013US relations may be ending. Gary He\/Reuters<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At the time, Mattis described the Indo-Pacific as a region stretching \u201cfrom Hollywood to Bollywood\u201d and highlighted the growing importance of the Indian Ocean to U.S. strategic planning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Describing the 2018 National Defense Strategy as a \u201croadmap for the American military,\u201d Mattis said at the time that the strategy \u201cacknowledges the Pacific challenges and signals America\u2019s resolve and lasting commitment to the Indo-Pacific.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration\u2019s 2026 National Defense Strategy repeatedly refers to the \u201cIndo-Pacific\u201d and identifies deterring China in the region as one of the military\u2019s primary objectives.
