Dick Rubin and Tom Kaine, and Republican Sens. Bill Cassidy and Thom Tillis have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durbin.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/durbin-cassidy-kaine-tillis-statement-on-social-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released a joint statement<\/a> calling for action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear now that Congress shouldn\u2019t delay any longer,\u201d the statement reads. \u201cSeveral of us have been coming together to talk about how we can strengthen Social Security for current and future generations of retirees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe say to our colleagues: join us in doing what we were elected to do\u2014legislate on hard issues and protect this lifeline program for our kids and grandkids. Congress has no shortage of ideas; we just need to actually debate them and vote,\u201d the statement continues.<\/p>\n<p>The statement was reportedly released after House Speaker Mike Johnson made remarks on the \u201cMoon Griffon Show\u201d radio program, announcing that he doesn\u2019t intend to address the Social Security crisis until next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason we are in trouble is because over 74 percent of federal spending is on autopilot, mandatory spending,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cThat\u2019s your entitlement programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and then things like Social Security. They have to be adjusted and fixed. We have a plan to do that next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Mike Johnson says Republicans want to cut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, calling them \u201centitlements\u201d and saying they need to be \u201cfixed\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/e1rqmtacB8\">pic.twitter.com\/e1rqmtacB8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Headquarters (@HQNewsNow) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HQNewsNow\/status\/2064083816956706831?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 8, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The delayed schedule didn\u2019t sit well with everybody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress needs to get their act together to address Social Security and the insolvency that\u2019s coming, instead of poking blame at other people whenever it is our duty and our responsibility,\u201d House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, meanwhile, pounced on Johnson by attacking him for wanting to actually fix Social Security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMike Johnson just revealed Republicans are waiting until after the midterms to move forward with plans to cut Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security,\u201d Kirsten Gillibrand fearmongered in a tweet.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f6a8.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\udea8\" class=\"wp-smiley\" \/> Mike Johnson just revealed Republicans are waiting until after the midterms to move forward with plans to cut Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.<\/p>\n<p>The only thing that can stand in the way of Trump\u2019s destruction is a Democratic majority in the House and the Senate.\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xbLhhUUgXc\">https:\/\/t.co\/xbLhhUUgXc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kirsten Gillibrand (@SenGillibrand) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenGillibrand\/status\/2064739589017792938?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It appears Democrats would rather Social Security remain on track for bankruptcy so that they can use it as a wedge issue.<\/p>\n<p>As previously reported, Social Security is going bankrupt because\u00a0America has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. In fact, fixing it through the revenue means \u2014 which is preferred by Democrats \u2014 would negatively impact working-class Americans.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/blog\/social-securitys-shortfall-worse-trustees-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cato Institute<\/a>\u00a0notes, for example, that fixing the problem through raising payroll taxes would require \u201ca 34 percent increase, raising the current 12.4 percent payroll tax rate immediately and permanently to 16.65 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a median worker in 2026, that tax increase would amount to roughly $2,900 per year, raising the worker\u2019s payroll tax burden from about $8,465 today to $11,365,\u201d according to the Institute. \u201cThat far exceeds what Americans say they are willing to pay: 77 percent of [survey] respondents \u2026 said they would be unwilling to pay even an extra $1,300 in annual payroll taxes to fix the program.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Is everyone paying attention?
