Kennedy Jr. recently\u00a0addressed the astronomical increase in alpha-gal syndrome, a tick-borne\u00a0infection that causes potentially life-threatening allergic reactions to red\u00a0meat:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cLast week, I went to New Hampshire\u2026 to address this explosion of\u00a0alpha-gal, and we take it very seriously. One of the epicenters is\u00a0<strong>Martha\u2019s Vineyard where 50% of the adult population is now affected.<\/strong> It\u00a0is really a devastating disease.<strong> You can\u2019t eat red meat for the rest of\u00a0your life. <\/strong>We are looking at medications that can serve as both\u00a0prophylactics and also <strong>potentially cures for it.<\/strong> <strong>We\u2019re funding those\u00a0studies now<\/strong> and we\u2019re working with the companies that are making\u00a0those. We\u2019ve also launched a <strong>major effort on tick control<\/strong> through a\u00a0number of different strategies that address deer populations\u2026 Three\u00a0ticks that are causing these, most of the tick-borne diseases, all breed on\u00a0deer. Wildlife, including deer and birds, moved freely\u00a0between the island and the Connecticut mainland, creating potential\u00a0pathways for pathogens to reach local populations.\u00a0The program gained additional momentum during the Kennedy\u00a0administration.\u00a0<strong>In response to Cuba\u2019s alignment with the Soviet\u00a0Union, the United States launched Operation Mongoose, a covert\u00a0campaign aimed at undermining Fidel Castro\u2019s regime. Some\u00a0proposals reportedly examined the use of disease-carrying insects to\u00a0target Cuban agricultural workers, particularly in sugarcane and\u00a0tobacco fields, in an effort to disrupt the island\u2019s economy.\u00a0<\/strong>While the full extent of these plans remains debated, declassified\u00a0documents confirm that Project 112, authorized in 1962, expanded\u00a0biological weapons testing and included research on mass insect\u00a0production.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Between 1966 and 1969, the U.S. military released 282,800 ticks labeled\u00a0with radioactive carbon-14 along bird migration routes in Virginia.<\/strong> The\u00a0goal was to study how ticks\u2014and the diseases they might carry\u2014could\u00a0spread across wide areas. And these weaponized ticks may have been released both\u00a0intentionally and unintentionally on an unsuspecting public by the US\u00a0military\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>I met a man in his seventies who had been in black ops in the CIA. He\u00a0told me that the strangest thing he ever did was drop infected ticks on\u00a0Cuban sugarcane workers in 1962. I verified the details of what he\u00a0told me \u2013 it turned out that the dropping of infected ticks in Cuba was\u00a0a subproject of Operation Mongoose, which aimed to weaken Fidel\u00a0Castro\u2019s position in Cuba by destroying its economy&#8230;<\/strong>\u00a0The US entomological bioweapons program was directed by the\u00a0Chemical Corps, headquartered at<strong> Fort Detrick, Maryland.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0program was almost as large and secretive as the Manhattan Project to\u00a0develop the atomic bomb. In 1951, Willy Burgdorfer, a medical zoologist\u00a0with experience working with ticks and Q fever, was recruited from\u00a0Basel, Switzerland, to conduct feasibility studies for Fort Detrick.
