National turnout in the country of three million people was close to 60%.<\/p>\n<p>Pashinyan claimed a &#8220;historic victory that will ensure Armenia\u2019s eternity and development&#8221; while also vowing to<strong> &#8220;continue the course of rapprochement with the West&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; but while balancing the pursuit of positive relations with Russia.<\/p>\n<p><a data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/pivot_0.jpg?itok=XM9VYQy6\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/pivot_0.jpg?itok=XM9VYQy6\"><\/a><\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"4abfc7a8-2416-4369-b8d8-15e238affcb4\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/pivot_0.jpg?itok=XM9VYQy6\" width=\"500\" \/><figcaption><em>Anadolu\/Getty Images: Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared victory in the parliamentary elections early Monday morning.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Pashinyan has made known his intentions for his country to eventually join the EU. However, Strong Armenia party is claiming that the winning side in reality mounted a campaign of interference and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/6\/8\/pm-pashinyans-party-wins-armenia-election-preliminary-results-show\">intimidation<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The second-placed Strong Armenia bloc is led by Samvel Karapetyan, a Russian-Armenian billionaire who made his fortune in Russia and is under house arrest for allegedly advocating for the government\u2019s overthrow. He has rejected the charge as politically motivated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Karapetyan called the elections &#8220;shameful&#8221; and denounced alleged violations and repression, saying dozens of his campaign staff had been arrested<\/strong>. Armenia\u2019s Investigative Committee said it had opened 59 criminal cases over alleged electoral violations and detained nine people.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Kremlin itself has also pounced on this theme, with\u00a0Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova alleging unfair and illegal tactics unleashed by local authorities on Russia-friendly interests inside Armenia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On June 7, parliamentary elections were held in Armenia in an atmosphere of unprecedented pressure on the opposition and <strong>interference from the West, primarily the EU<\/strong>,&#8221; Zakharova <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/2144057\">commented<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And more of her remarks via <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/2144057\">TASS<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>She stressed that the preliminary results announced by the republic&#8217;s Central Election Commission indicate that the Civil Contract party of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which declared its victory, &#8220;did not receive a monopoly on power.&#8221; &#8220;Moreover, compared to the previous electoral cycle, <strong>its support has noticeably decreased<\/strong>,&#8221; Zakharova added.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Recent years of war between Christian Armenia and its better-armed Muslim neighbor Azerbaijan (which is a secular Republic) has seen tensions ratchet between one-time close allies Armenia and Russia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Armenia has long been a key member of the regional Russian-led bloc, the\u00a0Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). However, Armenia froze its participation since 2024,\u00a0<strong>outraged over\u00a0Russia&#8217;s failure to\u00a0protect ethnic Armenians during\u00a0Azerbaijan\u2019s 2023 takeover of Nagorno-Karabakh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" xml:lang=\"en\">PM Nikol Pashinyan\u2019s party has won the election in Armenia with 50% of the votes, securing a comfortable majority in Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Pashinyan will now be able to continue strengthening Armenia\u2019s relations with the EU, move away from Russia and signing a peace deal with Azerbaijan <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QdWsHwQ8S3\">pic.twitter.com\/QdWsHwQ8S3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Visegr\u00e1d 24 (@visegrad24) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/visegrad24\/status\/2063931439133978958?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 8, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Russia since played a &#8216;peacekeeping&#8217; role with some limited troop deployments; however, Armenian Christians had already been booted from the ancient enclave. Armenian officials (and the population) have since<strong> expressed bitterness that Moscow didn&#8217;t do more to bolster its historic claims on<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Nagorno-Karabakh<\/strong>.
