A \u201cpredictable segue\u201d followed James Carville\u2019s revelatory remarks about his support for Maine\u2019s Democratic Senate hopeful, which earned him respect for honesty.<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably the only thing he\u2019s honest about.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s often been said that if the Democratic Party didn\u2019t have double standards, they\u2019d have no standards at all. Amid the mounting controversy surrounding Graham Platner\u2019s primary campaign, the longtime Democratic strategist owned up to as much when he admitted on CNN that he \u201cwouldn\u2019t be so forgiving\u201d if a Republican presented with the same scandals.<\/p>\n

The exchange took place during Friday\u2019s installment of \u201cThe Lead\u201d when CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper asked Carville, \u201cWhat would you say to a Republican who says, \u2018James, if there was a Republican combat veteran who had a Nazi tattoo, a Totenkopf tattoo, you wouldn\u2019t be so forgiving,\u2019 what would you say to that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding bluntly, the Ragin\u2019 Cajun expressed,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s true. I would say you\u2019re exactly right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tapper: What would you say to a Republican who says if a Republican combat veteran had a Nazi tattoo, you wouldn\u2019t be so forgiving?<\/p>\n

Carville: It\u2019s true. I would say you\u2019re exactly right.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf that person was a four-time combat veteran,\u201d he continued before pivoting to President Donald Trump, \u201cI\u2019d say I\u2019d never vote for him \u2014 or maybe it\u2019s her, now we have women in combat \u2014 but, but, you know, you can\u2019t, but I wouldn\u2019t vote, I wouldn\u2019t vote for \u2014 I think the greatest danger we face right now is from Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the tattoo, past remarks and a more recent scandal regarding sexually explicit messages the married man allegedly sent to multiple women, Carville issued his endorsement for Platner in a video<\/a> titled, \u201cWhy Susan Collins Must Be Defeated.\u201d<\/p>\n

In it, he said of the allegations against the Democratic candidate, \u201cI don\u2019t care. If you committed a crime, then charge him and then throw is a** in jail. But, so far, we have none of that. We got a f*cked up guy, who he could be 100 times more f*cked up than he is, and he\u2019d never be as f*cked up as what we got in Washington now anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to liken the need to win to President Abraham Lincoln\u2019s suspension of habeas corpus.<\/p>\n

During the exchange with Tapper, Carville was also asked for a response to the notion from Democratic activist Cheyenne Hunt, who spoke out against voting for Platner, that \u201cwomen shouldn\u2019t be sacrificed for the sake of an election.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reminding that he had first endorsed Janet Mills in the primary, Carville said, \u201cI might point out, this guy had four combat deployments,\u201d before arguing, \u201cIt may be good to have a combat veteran who is having PTSD, who is struggling, who is having mental issues, on the floor of the United States Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an environment where deflection and distraction are the norm, aside from his attempted potshot at the president, Carville managed to earn some respect for admitting partisanship was his key metric in the race.<\/p>\n

At least he\u2019s honest about his hypocrisy.<\/p>\n
