Leftist comedian Bill Maher dismantled one Democratic senator\u2019s pearl-clutching take on CBS News and \u201ccensorship.\u201d<\/p>\n

The firing of \u201c60 Minutes\u201d<\/span> correspondent Scott Pelley came as a shock to Democrats, whose iron grasp on the media outlet has been threatened by CEO Bari Weiss and her desire to return to the roots of journalism. Particularly offended was Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who shared his opinion on the matter with a less-than-impressed Maher.<\/p>\n

No matter which direction Chris Murphy turned, Maher kept getting in his way.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think of the shakeup at \u201960 Minutes\u2019?\u201d Maher asked. \u201cBig controversy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re watching a censorship state be created,\u201d the senator replied. \u201c[President Donald] Trump is using the powers that he has available as president of the United States to install only friendly ownership at the big media companies. He\u2019s using regulatory powers to punish people who oppose him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a big charge that you just made, that \u201960 Minutes\u2019 itself and CBS itself is now completely MAGA. I don\u2019t see it that way,\u201d Maher argued.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not completely MAGA,\u201d the lawmaker retreated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it\u2019s kind of what you said,\u201d Maher pressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut he is clearly intent on installing people who will tell his story and will keep his critics off the air,\u201d Murphy explained, prompting Maher to agree, but pose an interesting question.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut let me ask you this question. I watch \u201960 Minutes\u2019 every week. I have since I was a kid. If I didn\u2019t hear all the buzz in the media, if I didn\u2019t read about it all the time, would I ever notice that it was any different? I don\u2019t think I would.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it\u2019s not just \u201960 Minutes\u2019 and part of it is you don\u2019t know what they choose not to air,\u201d Murphy noted. \u201cPart of what the allegation is, is that they are killing stories that would be embarrassing for the president. So it\u2019s hard to know what you\u2019re missing in a censorship environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019ve seen ones that are not very favorable to the president.\u201d Maher pointed out. \u201cThat\u2019s what I\u2019m saying, I don\u2019t know if I would have noticed anything different if I hadn\u2019t been reading about it. Also, I just don\u2019t think being a \u201960 Minutes\u2019 correspondent is that hard. I don\u2019t feel like Scott Pelley was a national treasure. Companies change hands all the time- I\u2019ve never liked him, sorry, I just never did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCompanies change hands, people bring in their own people, their new ownership. Just because something changes doesn\u2019t mean, I feel like we see everything through such a partisan lens. \u2018Oh my God,\u00a060 Minutes has a new cast!\u2019 So does Saturday Night Live,\u201d the host quipped.<\/p>\n
