Trump said that the \u201cfree houses,\u201d \u201cfree food,\u201d and \u201cfree everything\u201d offered by communist ideas \u201ceventually … ends, and it leads to death, destruction, and squalor\u2014100 percent of the time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trump was responding to a question<\/a> from NTD, a sister outlet of The Epoch Times, related to a post he made on Truth Social the same day discussing communist ideology.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommunists always do well with the voters, or as they would say, the people in the early years, but in the end, the country, state, or city goes to hell. <\/strong>Great violence proceeds at levels never seen before, and the entity dissolves into poverty, squalor, and crime,\u201d Trump wrote<\/a> in that post. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cRemember, breathtaking \u2018popularity\u2019 first, and then guaranteed death and destruction.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The comments came as the eastern hemisphere entered June 4\u2014the anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s brutal massacre of thousands of peaceful pro-democracy demonstrators in Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989.<\/p>\n

Communism<\/a> is an ideology and system that has directly caused the deaths of an estimated 100 million people worldwide, although some estimates indicate as many as 200 million. Today, the five communist regimes that still exist\u2014in China, North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, and Laos\u2014are among the world\u2019s worst violators of human rights.<\/p>\n

The president told reporters that his Truth Social post was inspired by his concerns about policies and candidates in places like New York and California.<\/p>\n

The president specifically referenced New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who openly ran his 2025 campaign as a self-described democratic socialist.<\/strong> Mamdani has drawn national reactions since his surprise victory over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.<\/p>\n

Democratic socialism describes an economic system under which the government provides certain key services, such as education and healthcare, through the use of a progressive taxation system. Critics have warned that such ideas work while the populace is wealthy but eventually fail, and lead to communist systems.<\/p>\n

Before his election, Trump had been openly critical of Mamdani. The two said they had a strong working relationship since they first met in person in November 2025.<\/p>\n

Trump has expressed personal admiration for Mamdani while maintaining his opposition to the New York Democrat\u2019s politics\u2014a tone he took again in his remarks on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI watched [Mamdani in] New York, and you know, I liked him very much,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Trump said, adding a reference to Mamdani\u2019s November visit and a second visit in February this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe stood right here, and he\u2019s been in the office a couple of times.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Trump then said his ideological disagreements with Mamdani remain intact.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a smart guy, I don\u2019t understand why he thinks it\u2019s okay for all these companies that pay hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes a year to leave,\u201d Trump said. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not going to have any tax base, and you\u2019re going to end up in hunger and squalor and death and destruction.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Trump was referencing warnings from chambers of business and other groups that the major companies and ultra-wealthy could begin to leave New York City as Mamdani moves to institute higher taxes on top earners in the city.<\/p>\n

Trump said that while it\u2019s harder to make the case for free enterprise, that system is the foundation of the United States\u2019 success and global leadership.<\/p>\n

\u201cFree enterprise is tougher to sell, but that\u2019s what\u2019s made our country great, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s great again now,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>the president said from the Oval Office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
