Video of California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer being confronted by a mob of protesters is going viral on social media.<\/p>\n

What started as an attempt to \u201ccourt black voters in historic Leimert Park, the cultural hub of Los Angeles\u2019s black community\u201d last Saturday turned into a screaming match, according to journalist Maeve Reston<\/a>. Despite his attempts to woo minority voters by touting his support for reparations and calling the black community \u201cthe moral leader of the United States,\u201d he was not immune from their anger.<\/p>\n

So, how did the event go from a show of support for the black community to what is seen above? According to Reston, it was due to a \u201csecurity incident\u201d rumor:<\/p>\n

But outside his event at the Ora Cafe, a small group of protesters were agitated. Rumors of a \u201csecurity incident\u201d spread inside the venue as towering members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters \u2014 a union supporting Steyer \u2014 inexplicably paced in their orange vests from the front door to the back door. Instead of taking questions from the audience, the event\u2019s moderator announced they\u2019d have to cut the dialogue short (even though Steyer insisted he wanted to stay).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If a mob of white people surrounded a black candidate like this, what would the media say that they refuse to say about this scene? In terms of Tom Steyer, I have no sympathy. Worth noting that this area has been greatly affected by state housing policy that mandates building and gives bonuses to builders who go bigger. Used to be quiet, black single-family homes. Tom Steyer has made clear he wants to continue this policy or even accelerate it.<\/p>\n
