Disney has reportedly asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to make \u201cThe View\u201d exempt from the \u201cEqual Time\u201d requirement that applies to broadcast programs.<\/p>\n

The \u201cEqual Time\u201d (Equal Opportunities) Rule comes from Section 315 of the Communications Act. It applies only to broadcast stations like traditional over-the-air TV and radio.<\/p>\n

If a broadcast station lets one legally qualified candidate \u201cuse\u201d its airtime during an interview or appearance, it generally must offer comparable opportunities to opposing candidates.<\/p>\n

This same rule doesn\u2019t apply to \u201cbona fide\u201d news programs as per exemptions that were codified into law by Congress in 1959.<\/p>\n

In a recent filing to the FCC, Disney argued that \u201cThe View\u201d is a \u201cbona fide\u201d news show and should therefore be exempt.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisney has filed a petition with the FCC asking the agency to declare that The View is exempt from the statutory equal opportunities requirements that would otherwise apply to broadcast shows,\u201d FCC chairman Brendan Carr revealed in a tweet Friday.<\/p>\n

He added that the agency will seek public comment on Disney\u2019s request and further suggested in his post that he doesn\u2019t think \u201cThe View\u201d deserves an exemption.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the Public Notice observes, Congress originally passed the equal opportunities law to prevent media gatekeepers from deciding the outcome of elections,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe law, even when it applies, does not prohibit anyone from having any candidate appear on any show. Rather, Congress intended it to empower voters with more information and encourage more speech,\u201d Carr continued.<\/p>\n

Many critics on social media responded to Disney\u2019s filing by practically bursting out in laughter at the thought that the extremely partisan, leftist hosts of \u201cThe View\u201d are in any way comparable to journalists:<\/p>\n

The View is not the news they just spread lies that they see on the internet nothing about them is the NEWS besides them being on air before the time the actual NEWS broadcast.<\/p>\n

One critic added<\/a> that in her opinion, \u201cThe View\u201d is no different than the National Enquirer, in that its content is \u201cfabricated,\u201d \u201cpartisan,\u201d \u201cdistorted,\u201d and\u00a0 \u201csensationalized.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, \u201cThe View\u201d had on 128 liberal guests<\/a>, including 25 leftist politicians, but only two supposed conservatives: Cheryl Hines, who used to be an anti-Trump Democrat, and former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who\u2019s since practically become a Democrat herself.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018The View\u2019 should be renamed \u2018The Cackle\u2019 and eliminated from the ABC News Division and placed in the comedy lineup with a warning label, \u2018This show is for non-entertainment purposes only,’\u201d Media Research Center president David Bozell previously said about the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe welcome an FCC investigation into whether \u2018The View\u2019 still qualifies as a bona fide news program. We don\u2019t think it does,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
