Norway Wants To Lead A “Viking Bloc” For Containing Russia In Northern Europe<\/span><\/p>\n

It can simultaneously threaten Russia along the increasingly interconnected Arctic and Baltic fronts.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Russian Ambassador to Norway Nikolai Korchunov gave a brief interview to\u00a0TASS<\/a>\u00a0about bilateral relations. He warned that Norway is integrating new NATO members\u00a0Sweden<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Finland<\/a>\u00a0into the bloc\u2019s regional plans.<\/strong> More American military bases and NATO facilities are opening up there too. To make matters worse, 32,500 troops from 14 NATO countries in last March\u2019s \u201cCold Response<\/a>\u201d military drills in Norway and Finland\u2019s northern regions, which add to growing NATO threats to Russia from this direction.<\/p>\n

NATO\u2019s militarization of the Arctic, which also includes\u00a0artificially engineered<\/a>\u00a0tensions over the demilitarized Svalbard Archipelago, is proceeding in parallel with its militarization of the Baltic.<\/p>\n

Korchunov believes that this raises the risk of the bloc one day attempting to blockade Russia. <\/strong>He reassured his compatriots that the authorities will defend their country\u2019s interests, however, including through military-technical means in an allusion to\u00a0new naval escorts<\/a>\u00a0of some commercial vessels.<\/p>\n

In connection with blockade scenarios, Korchunov was asked about TASS\u2019 report from early April about how \u201cUkraine readies terrorist attacks on Russian ships off coast of Norway<\/a>\u201d, which he said caused quite a stir in his host country. He didn\u2019t elaborate on how exactly Russia plans to deter or defend against potential Ukrainian drone attacks from Norway, but he ominously warned that escalating threats to Russia from Norway \u201cwill inevitably lead to a directly proportional increase in risks for Norway itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Korchunov wasn\u2019t asked about it in his interview, but the week prior to its release, the UK announced that it\u2019ll lead a\u00a0new multilateral naval initiative<\/a>\u00a0against Russia with Norway and eight others. <\/strong>This goes to show Norway\u2019s growing role in threatening Russia through blockade scenarios, whether they\u2019re in its neighboring Arctic region and\/or the nearby Baltic one. As a founding member of NATO, Norway seems to believe that this obligates it to lead Russia\u2019s containment in Northern Europe.<\/p>\n

To that end, it\u2019s functioning as Sweden and Finland\u2019s \u201cbig brother\u201d in NATO while actively cooperating with the UK, one of Russia\u2019s historical nemeses. This enables Norway to simultaneously advance Russia\u2019s containment along the\u00a0increasingly interconnected<\/a>\u00a0Arctic and Baltic fronts. Given its oil wealth, Norway could also extend military loans to its \u201clittle brothers\u201d for accelerating their military buildups and the subsequent creation of a northern regional command against Russia as part of the US\u2019 \u201cNATO 3.0<\/a>\u201d plans.<\/p>\n

The preceding insight draws attention to one of the ways in which multipolarity is reshaping Europe, namely through the trend of regional military integration, whether it\u2019s Norway wanting to lead a nascent \u201cViking Bloc<\/a>\u201d or Poland trying to\u00a0restore its lost Great Power status<\/a>\u00a0in Central and Eastern Europe.<\/strong> The\u00a0Anglo-American Axis<\/a>\u00a0is managing this division of military-strategic labor, with the US being the senior partner and the UK being the junior one, and they plan to replicate this model elsewhere in Eurasia.<\/p>\n

Apart from Norway and Poland\u2019s regional military blocs, Romania provides this duopoly with reach\u00a0into Moldova<\/a>\u00a0and the Black Sea, while Turkiye expands their influence in the Black Sea but also the South Caucasus, Caspian Sea, and Central Asia via the \u201cTrump Route for International Peace and Prosperity<\/a>\u201d. There\u2019s also\u00a0AUKUS+<\/a>, which could prospectively include Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and even Indonesia. The emerging result is \u201cThe Globalization of NATO<\/a>\u201d with multipolar characteristics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
